Comming from this background, I do feel that a lot of stuff is being "pushed". That's part of the reason I wish you all to move to Israel and discover something new.Yod is absolutely right, most believers in Israel don't have to proove they are Jewish and there is much more freedom. We love the feasts and Jewish things, but most of us would probably be labeled traditional/Spirit-led. We really don't make much of an issue about Jewish lifestyle as both seculars, traditional, and orthodox who come to Yeshua in Israel usually end up blending together in traditional messianic Spirit-led Judaism.
I think Messianic Jews in Israel do sometimes feel the need to prove they are jewish - a friend of mine once told me that I was so lucky to not be a jew because I didn't have to deal with classmates calling me a traitor; I had an excuse for believing in Yeshua - I am not a jew. (And I was thinking that she was lucky because she could prove to friends that you can be a Jew and still believe in Yeshua. They always told me "your religion is good for yourself. I am a jew and have an obligation to never convert.")
But I do suppose that the proving to be jewish in Israel is more to be done in the face of secular people than the orthodox. (On a day to day basis) Hence there is more of the general public's idea of jewish identity. And the general public, as I said, don't eat pork, fast on kippur, celabrate the holidays, do bat/bar mitzva and study a little bible in school. They don't even keep the shabbat, though they expect Messianics who claim to be what they are to have some sort of Sabath keeping. Women don't go to the mikveh. The only time most of them do, is when they prepare to get married, because they have to do a jewish marriage, so they comply with whatever the rabbies ask. That is why they always have fake nails when they get married.
And yet these secular Israelies couldn't feel more jewish than what they already feel.
In the face of this, different things are demanded of the congregations, which makes all the difference. Which is why, ever scince I discovered these boards (and delete this if this is inappropriate) I do feel that some Messianics just might be going too far...
So I wish you all to move to Israel, I'd help you all get settled, and give you free hebrew lessons if I could...
For those of you studying hebrew, כל הכבוד
