For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.
Romans 5:19

Adam sinned without the law.

JLB

.
One mans disobedience denotes the breaking of a Law.

Gen. 2:16,17
16) And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
17) But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Good answer.

I agree.

Why was that a law?

JLB

.
In the Bible whenever God says don't That Automatically Becomes Law.

The 10 Commandments are a Requirement of Christians today in the aspect, they were never done away with.

The Requirement aspect of the 10 Commandments with regard to the Christian, a Christians Salvation is not dependent upon the keeping of them, having had them Fulfilled and then Applied to our heart, we in essence have kept them In Christ.

Our Salvation is by Grace through Faith, not in the keeping of the Law.

We are dead to the Law of Sin and Death.

Hi JIMINZ, nice to see you again.

ABSOLUTELY! Great post. This is what is being shared here. It is only by FAITH that works by LOVE that we can FOLLOW him who calls us in LOVE to LOVE another and LOVE is the fulfilling of God's LAW in those who believe God's WORD. Love is expressed by OBEDIENCE to God's LAW. If you LOVE someone you will not kill them :)

Liked your post, thanks for shaing JIMINZ

Nowhere does Jesus repeat the commands:

Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.

Do not use the LORD's name in vain.

8
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Hello Ron nice to see you and thanks for sharing your thoughts here.

It is true that not every commandment from the 10 commandments have been repeated word for word in the NEW TESTAMENT. However, your claim above is like saying because the words ten commandments are not being used in a scripuure when a scripture is quoting individual commandments from the ten commandments then the scripture is not talking about the ten commandments. That would be a false argument as the subject matter is the ten commandments.

In your view, if any of the 10 commandments are not stated word for word as they were written in the OLD TESTAMENT does that mean they are no longer to be kept if the topic and subject matter in the NEW TESTAMENT are the very commandments you claim are not repeated word for word?

If there is no scripture that says Gods 10 commandments or any individual commandments have been abolished then what makes you think any commandments have been abolished when they have already been given in God's WORD and God's people had been following all of God's LAWS for 1000's of years?

Did Jesus teach us the correct way to keep the Sabbath?
Did Jesus and all the Apostles after the death of Jesus keep the Sabbath?
Did most of the writers on the NEW TESTAMENT teach obedience to all of God's LAW by faith?
Is breaking any of God's 10 commandments sin in the NEW TESTAMENT?

In your view because the words not to take the Lords name in vain is not used word for word are we free now to take the Lord's name in vain?

Ok sorry Ron, with all due respect this is a silly argument to try and say some of God's commandments have been abolished because they have not been stated Word for Word in the NEW TESTAMENT when the same commandments are taught and followed by God's people in the NEW TESTAMENT.

SCRIPTURE SUPPORT: ALL OF GOD'S 10 COMMANDMENT IN THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENT SCRIPTURES CONFIRMED Click me.

Jesus and all the apostles taght all the 10 Commandments and followed them even after the death of Jesus.

Hope this is something to think about. Please tke the time to read the scriptures in the linked post above.

May God bless you as you seek him through his WORD.

OPEN FOR FRIENDLY CHRISTIAN DISCUSSION.

What are your thoughts? ARE God's 10 Commandments ABOLISHED like some think and no longer the standard for Christian living?

The Ten Commandments are far inferior to Christ's standards for Christian living.

Someone perfectly keeping the Ten Commandments is nowhere close to meeting Christ's standards.

The Pharisees whom Jesus cursed were keeping the Ten Commandments.

The person who perfectly keeps the Ten Commandments is failing miserably at being a Christian.

Hi RDKirk, nice to meet you here brother thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Some good points you have brought out. NONE can keep God's LAW because we are all sinners in need of a Savior. This is the purpose of the 10 Commandments. It is to give us a knowledge of what sin is and lead us to the cross of Christ with no excuses to believe the promises of Gods forgiveness.

The NEW COVENANT is for a new heart to LOVE God and our fellow man and it is only as we are born again to LOVE that we can LOVE him who first loved us. LOVE is the fulfilling (doing) of God's LAW in all those who BELIEVE and FOLLOW his WORD (Hebrews 8:10-12; Romans 13:8-10; Matthew 22:36-40; Romans 3:31).

Thanks for sharing your thought RDKirk,

May God bless you as you seek him through his WORD

Without the law it is impossible to sin.

Hi Bluecomet, nice to meet you here. Welcome and thanks for your thoughts.
Not really however. You will still sin if there is no law because it is written..

ROMANS 2:12-13
[12], FOR AS MANY AS HAVE SINNED WITHOUT THE LAW SHALL PERISH WITHOUT THE LAW : and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
[13], For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

The purpose of God's LAW is only to give us a KNOWLEDGE of good and evil; SIN AND RIGHTOUESNESS.

PSALMS 119:172 [172], My tongue shall speak of your word: for ALL YOUR COMMANDMENTS ARE RIGHTOUESNESS.

ROMANS 3:20 [20] Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: FOR BY THE LAW IS THE KNOWLEDGE OF SIN.

Thanks for sharing Bluecomet, nice to meet you and hope this helps.

May God bless you as you seek him through his WORD.

Talking about the ceremonial law (sanctuary law) not the 10 commandments.

Welcome Original Happy Camper, great to meet you here.

Absolutely! Short but great post. Many do not read about the Shadow laws from the Mosaic book of the covenant and do not realise that these were all prophetic in nature pointing to Jesus and God's plan of salvation. These all having been fulfilled in Christ many think are referring to God's eternal LAW (10 Commandments) that give us a knowledge of what sin is and lead us to Christ for salvation. Nice to see someone who studies God's Word for themselves. Thanks for sharing,

May God bless you as you seek him through his Word

Hi all,

Some people are going around teaching that God's 10 Commandments are ABOLISHED and no longer a standard for Christian living. Yet the NEW TESTAMENT alone does not teach this at all.

1 JOHN 2:1-4
[1], MY LITTLE CHILDREN, THESE THINGS, I WRITE UNTO YOU THE YOU SIN NOT. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
[2], And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
[3], And HEREBY WE KNOW THAT WE KNOW HIM, IF WE KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS.
[4], HE THAT SAYS, I KNOW HIM AND DOES NOT KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS, IS A LIAR AND THE TRUTH IS NOT IN HIM.

WHAT DID JESUS AND THE APOSTLES TEACH ABOUT GOD’S LAW
(the scriptures below are no where near exhaustive from the NT alone)

Jesus taught the 10 commandments…..

1. Jesus kept God’s Law (10 commandments) and said the Law and the prophets would not pass away (Matt 5:17-18)
2. Jesus taught others to follow the 10 commandments (Mark 10:17-21)
3. Jesus taught that Love is the fulfilling (doing) of God’s Law (10 commandments Matt 22:36-40)
4. If we break God’s Law by following man-made traditions we are not following God (Matt 15:3-9)
5. Jesus says if we commit sin we are a servant of sin and he has come to free us from sin (John 8:32-36)
6. Jesus taught if you love God you will keep God’s Law and abide in His Love (John 14:15; 15:10
7. If anyone is breaking any of God’s commandments and teaching others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven <least = lost> (Matt 5:19)
8. No one can obey God’s Law producing the fruit of obedience of ourselves and unless we abide in Jesus we can do nothing (John 15:4-10)

Paul affirms the Ten Commandments……

1. Paul teaches God's people keep the Sabbath Hebrews 4.
2. Paul tells gentiles that "what matters is KEEPING the Commandments of GOD" 1 Cor 7:19
3. Paul tells gentiles "it is not the HEARERS of the Law that are just before God but the DOERS of the Law will be justified... on the day when according to my GOSPEL God will judge all mankind" Rom 2:13-16
4. Paul asks that gentiles consider the doctrine of LAW "Do we then make void the LAW of God by our faith? God forbid! In fact we establish the Law of God" Rom 3:31
5. Paul tells ALL Christians that it is only the lost who will "not subject themselves to the Law of God neither indeed CAN they" Rom 8:6-8
6 Paul reaches all Christians under the NEW Covenant that God's LAW as known in Jer 31:31-33 is "written on the heart and mind" Heb 8:7-11
7. Paul tells all Christians that the OT text is to be used for Doctrine 2Tim 3:16
AND He never claims that "if I did not write it -- it is not scripture for us today" -- as one or two have imagined for us.
8. Paul tells all Christians that the 5th commandment is the "FIRST commandment with a promise" Eph 6:1-2 and is binding on all Christians.
9. God's Law (10 commandments) are holy, just and good (Rom 7:12)
10. God's Law gives us a knowledge of what sin is (Rom 3:20; 7:7)
11. The penalty of breaking God's Law without Jesus is death (Rom 6:23)
12. If we break God's Law we dishonor God (Rom 2:23)
13. If we sin we are "under the Law" and guilty before God (Rom 3:19)
14. We are saved by faith but our faith establishes the Law in us (Rom 3:31)
15. If we are saved by grace we should not break God's Law (Rom 6:1-7)
16. We should not break God's Law if we are under grace (Rom 6:15)
17. We are to serve the Law of God through the mind because that is where sin starts (Rom 6:17; 7:25; 8:4; 12:2)
18. It is God's Law that brings us to Jesus (Gal 3:24)
19. God's salvation frees us from sin so we can be obedient to God's Law and live a life of holiness (Rom 6:22)
20. We will be judged by God's Law and only those that are obedient will be justified because of their faith (Rom 2:4-13)
21. God's Law can only be obeyed through love and a changed heart which comes by faith in God's Word (Rom 2:21-29; 13:9-10; Heb 8:9-10)
22. If we break God's Law and are in unrepentant sin we will be lost and will received God's judgements (Heb 10:26-27)

John affirms the 10 commandments……

1. John says it is only by keeping God’s 10 commandments that we know that we know God (1 John 2:3)
2. If someone says that they know God and do not keep God’s 10 commandments they are lying and not telling the truth (1 John 2:4)
3. We should purify ourselves as Jesus is pure (1 John 3:3)
4. Sin is the breaking of God’s 10 commandments (1 John 3:4)
5. Whoever is abiding in Christ does not commit sin (1 John 3:6; John 15:4-10)
6. If you are in unrepentant sin you have not seen Jesus or know him (1 John 3:6)
7. John warns us that only those that are obedience to God’s Law are his true followers (1 John 3:7)
8. If someone is committing unrepentant sin they are following the devil and not God (1 John 3:7)
9. If you are born of God and abiding in him you will not commit sin (1 John 3:9; 1 John 3:6; John 15:4-10
10. It is the keeping of God’s commandments that is the difference between those that are following God and those that are not following God (1 John 3:10; 1 John 5:3)
11. It is only by Love through faith that we can keep God’s commandments (1 John 5:3-4)
12. God’s true believers in the end days will keep all of God’s commandments through faith in Jesus (Rev 14:12; 22:14)

James also affirms the 10 commandments…….

1. James says God’s Law (10 commandments) are a Royal Law (James 2:8)
2. If we break one of God’s commandments we a guilty before God as sinners breaking all of God’s Law and gave some examples of breaking God’s Law (James 2:9-11)
3. James says God’s Law is a law of liberty and freedom (James 2:12)
4. The 10 commandments (God’s Law) are the standard in the judgment (James 2:12)
5. If our faith does not have the fruit of obedience to God’s Law it is dead and not true faith (James 2:16-26)

Peter affirms the 10 commandments……..

1. Sanctification is to obedience to God’s Law (1 Pet 1:2)
2. We can only be changed from sin to obedience to God’s Law by the power of God and it will be revealed in the last days (1 Pet 1:5)
3. We should give up our sins to be holy because Jesus is holy (1 Pet 1:13-16)
4. Jesus is your example who did no sin (1 Pet 2:21-22)
5. Cease from sin and do not live in the flesh (1 Pet 4:1-3)
6. Judgement will begin at the house of God and sinners (those breaking God’s 10 commandments) will not be saved.
7. God has given us his precious promises and as we believe them God will grant us his divine power to live a life of Godliness (obedience to God’s Law; 2 Pet 1:2-4)
8. The Un-Godly (disobedient to God’s Law) will be like Sodom and Gomorrah (2 Pet 2:6)
9. If any turn away from God’s Law and are in unrepentant sin breaking any of God’10 commandments they will be lost (2 Pet 2:20-22)
10 God is not willing that any should perish but that everyone should come to repentance and turn away from sin to follow God’s 10 commandments because those that do not will receive the judgements of God (2 Pet 3:5-14)

I see some people do not know what made up the OLD COVENANT laws and their purpose in both the OLD and NEW COVENANT and therefore think God's LAW has been abolished when it is only th SHADOW laws from the MOSAIC BOOK of the COVENANT and not God's ETERNAL LAW that gives us a KNOWLEDGE of what sin is when broken (Romans 3:20; Romans 7:7; James 2:11; 1 John 3:4)

CAN'T HAVE A GOSPEL WITHOUT THE LAW

I believe the role of God's LAW is to give us a KNOLEDGE of good and evil; SIN and RIGHTOUESNESS. Nothing more and nothing less. They are our duty of LOVE to God and man. They show us that all we can do without Jesus is sin and that we are all sinners in need of a Saviour.

*If God's LAW is ABOLSHED then we no longer have any KNOWLEDGE of what SIN is.
*If we have no KNOWLEDGE of what sin is and that we are sinners we ahve no need of a Saviour
*If we have no need of a Saviour then we have no Salvation
*If we have no Salavtion then we are still in our sins and the scriputure is fulfilled...

ROMANS 2:12-13 [12], For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; [13], For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

My thoughts is that we are NOT SAVED by God's 10 Commandments. Their purpose is to give us a KNOWLEDGE of what SIN is and to lead us to the Cross so that we might be justified by faith (Galatains 3:23-24). The ROLE of God's LAW is to give us a KNOWLEDGE of good and evil; SIN and RIGHTEOUSNESS (Romans 3:20; Psalms 119:172; James 2:11 Romans 7:7; 1 John 3:4). In the NEW COVENANT God's LAW is to be written on our hearts as we are born again to LOVE and LOVE is the fulfilling of God's LAW in those who BELIEVE God's WORD (Hebrews 8:10-12; Romans 13:8-10; Matthew 22:36-40; 1 John 3:3-10; John 3:3)

OPEN FOR FRIENDLY CHRISTIAN DISCUSSION.

What are your thoughts? ARE God's 10 Commandments ABOLISHED like some think and no longer the standard for Christian living?

May God bless you as we seek him through his WORD

Yes, the law serves an important purpose, but Christ fulfilled the law - thus to us, Christ has now become our law, He is now the standard.

Christian living means to bear fruits of the Spirit, and this is Christlikeness. Our ability to obey the law and walk in holiness flows out of our intimacy with Christ and it is accomplished by His Spirit. The measure of our maturity is how brightly we reflect the glory of Christ. Our Christian life is not based on our personal adherence to the law, but on our adherence and obedience to Christ and His word. It is out of this that all other things flow. This is the wisdom of God, this is the way by which He conforms us into the image of His Son, and this is how we are to walk with Him - it is all through Christ.

Christ taught people to follow Him. We are told the law points to Christ and finds its complete fulfillment in Him. Our role is to elevate Christ, not the law - for if we are in Christ and Christ is in us, the law will find its fulfillment.

Galatians 2:20 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

Our law is Christ.

Pay attention to grasp the spiritual truths of the gospel. Christ was sent by the Father and fulfilled the Father's law, Christ now sends us and gives us His law to follow, which we are able to do by His Spirit. This is the order of our salvation. Do not look to the Scriptures in vain as the Jews did.

John 14:23 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.

To also answer the Sabbath question, it is clear from Scripture that it is a non-issue. There is no explicit command in the NT to observe the Sabbath nor are there any warnings on breaking it. This truth is further solidifed by the Council in Jerusalem - Acts 15. Out of all the things that the Apostles agreed on concerning the Gentiles, Sabbath observance is not found among them.

God Bless

Good answer.

I agree.

Why was that a law?

Well, let me be more precise, as Paul was precise.

In the scriptures, the word "law" pertains to "covenant." The covenant is an agreement between two parties that outlines specific promises of performance from both parties from a beginning epoch (specifically, the shedding of blood) to a termination epoch.

The covenant contains promises of performance from both parties, with the performance of man being obedience to God's commandments.

So commandments are within the covenant, and commandments may be different from covenant to covenant...however, it's reasonable that some of the same commandments might occur in multiple covenants (like different mortgages from the same mortgage company are likely to contain some of the same boilerplate requirements).

So it's helpful to pay attention to the distinctions made in scripture--especially by Paul--between the use of "law" and "commandments."

It's also useful to note in Hebrews 8 that the new covenant contains "better promises"--that is higher levels of performance--from both God and man than the old covenant.

What constitutes God's higher level of performance? At least two. One would be the continuous indwelling of the Holy Spirit to be our constant Counseler and Sustainer. The second would be everlasting life.

What constitutes our higher level of performance? That begins with the Sermon on the Mount and taking in Christ's commandments as a matter of the heart and the mind, not merely actions of the hand.

The failure of the NT Jesus to quote or discuss parts of the OT Mosaic Law is significant. I am a Christ-follower.

Hi Ron, nice to see you again. In the days of Jesus and the Apostles. The OLD TESTAMENT scriptures was the bible. Most of the Words of Jesus in the NEW TESTAMENT he was quoting OLD TESTAMENT scripture.

We are to live by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4). Together the OLD and NEW TESTAEMENT scriptures make up the WORD of GOD. These are the two great witnesses. The OLD bearing witness to the NEW.

Nice, I am a follower of Chrsit to. He is the living Word of God who gives us his written word that we are to BELIEVE and FOLLOW.

May God bless you as you seek him though his WORD

Hello ThatCanadianDude, great to meet you here and welcome.

Thanks for your thoughts on the topic here. Jesus is indeed our example in all things. He is the living WORD of God. Jesus is the creator of heaven and earth and he has given us the gift of his written WORD in the bible. As Christians we are to LIVE BY EVERY WORD that proceeds out of the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4). You cannot have the Gospel without the LAW both are God's WORD and the one leads to the other as it is wrttien,

MATTHEW 9:12-13, [12], But when Jesus heard that, he said to them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. [13], But go you and learn what that means, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

You cannot know sin without God's LAW because God's LAW gives us a knowledge of what sin is (Romans 3:4; Romans 7:7; James 2:11)

If you have no knowledge of what sin is then you have no need of a Saviour
If you have no need of a Saviour you have no salvation
If you have no salvation you are lost because you are still in your sins.

As Timothy has said...

1 TIMOTHY 1:8 [8] But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully

God's LAW is the mirror and teacher that shows us our need of Christ that we might be justified by faith and re-made into his image and walk as he walked in his Spirit, to LOVE as he first LOVED us.

We are not saved by the LAW. Christ saves us by FAITH to LOVE and LOVE is the fruit of OBEDIENCE to God's LAW in those who BELIEVE his WORD. This is the NEW COVENANT promise (Hebrews 8:10-12; Matthre 22:36-40; Romans 13:8-10; Romans 3:31; 1 John 3:3-10). This is why Jesus says to all those who BELEIVE and FOLLOW Him; IF you love me keep my commandments (John 14:15)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts TCD it was a good read.

May God bless you as you seek him through his WORD

Amen!

How about this.

My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.

For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” John 5:16-17

He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 1 John 2:4

Do you understand what the phase
“I know Him” refers to?

Hi discipler7, nice to see you again :), some comments for your consideration below.

How is God going to put His Law in the believers' mind and write them on their hearts if the believers do not know the Law, which consists of 613 Old Testament laws or Moses laws.?

God's is not going to put 613 OLD TESTAMENT laws in your heart. Many of these were SHADOW laws for the remission of sins from the MOSAIC BOOK of the COVENANT. Many of these were prophetic in nature pointing to Jesus and God's plan of salvation in the NEW TESTAMENT. These are now fulfilled in Christ. The NEW COVENANT promise is for a new heart to LOVE God and our fellow man (Hebrews 8:10-12). We must be Born again by faith (John 3:3). God's promise is to write his LAWS of LOVE in the heart of his people and LOVE is the fulfilling of the 10 Commandments (Romans 13:8-10). Obedience to God's LAW is the fruit of faith and the very expression of LOVE to GOD and LOVE to our fellow man.

For Jewish Christians, God can easily do the above. Not so for many Gentile Christians who had previously led mostly lawless lives from childhood as Gentiles(cf; ACTS.15:24-29).

Gentiles are now grafted in to God's ISRAEL (Romans 11:16-27). If you are not a part of God's ISRAEL then you have no part in the NEW COVENANT (Hebrews 8:10-12)

Thanks for sharing your questions discipler7, may God bless you as you seek him through his Word.

Hope this helps.
