Are Christians the new chosen people? Or the the new Israel?
As I read it, Christians are chosen in a different sense than Jews were. Christians are chosen for eternal life and to be conformed to the image of Christ. Jews were chosen to carry down the Word of God till the coming of the Messiah and to demonstrate the vanity of performance based salvation in light of inherent human sinfulness. Are Christians the new chosen people? No, I think the Jews are still the Lord's chosen people. That is a heavy burden to bear - look at their history. Are Christians the new chosen people? Or the the new Israel?

I agree. Gentile believers have been "grafted" in.
It depends on how you look at it, I think. The Lord doesn't play favorites. Being the Lord's "chosen people" doesn't make you better than anyone else. It means that the Lord holds you up as an example to others. That can be good if you obey the Lord, and it can be bad if you don't.All Israel are God's chosen, not just the Jews. The Jews received the "scepter" promise; that of the rulership of Christ, and the titular rulership over all Israel (the British monarchy). Joseph, representing the other tribes, received the "birthright" promise of material wealth and power. Both promises have been kept.
The "gentiles" Paul speaks of in Romans 11 are the lost tribes of Israel, not true 'gentiles'. Read it more carefully. The translators have used misleading word translations. The theme of the chapter is given in the first two verses,
"I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew.................."
This is the conclusion of Paul's narrative,
25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel (the Jews), until the fulness of the Gentiles (tribes, nations) be come in.
26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob (not the real Gentiles).
I'm a Gentile. I have been "grafted in".
