The church I attended and was saved in as a child...(I was a kid picked up on bus route..bro came some with...occasionally my mom would come and drive...we were taught to give God our time if we couldn't tithe..

Today I tithe...not 10% and the Lord hasn't cursed me

The interesting thing is even if we were still under the Old Covenant, the people demanding you give 10% of your gross income would still be in the wrong. Tithe was not given in money but in food. So not only are these people guilty of taking Scripture out of context, they have ignored God's rules for tithing and made up their own rules, accusing those who refuse to bow down to their man made system of robbing God. It's a shame that they cannot see their error.
Amen! Malachi 3:10 - Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this, Says the Lord of hosts, If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it.

Malachi 3:8 “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ In tithes and offerings. 9 You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. The whole nation of Israel. Malachi is written to Jews under the Old Covenant.

That same Pastor I mentioned in post #14 legalistically uses the 10% tithe to brow-beat people in that church with guilt. He even handed out pledge cards for people to fill out so they can pledge to give extra money on a monthly basis over a three year period above and beyond the 10% tithe directly to the "moving forward" project to build a new mega church (that he really did not need and to this day has never built). More than a few people have left that church because all that Pastor mainly talks about is money (primarily the 10% tithe) and building that new mega church.

During one sermon, he even mentioned that a member of that church came into his office one day somewhat irate and said that he is leaving that church because he is tired of hearing about money all the time and needs to find a church where he can go deeper in the Word. The Pastor mentioned that the word "deeper" is a code word for "I'm not tithing 10%." The Pastor went on to say that he checked the records and sure enough that member of the church was not giving 10% and some months gave nothing at all and then acted like good riddance to him! I was not impressed. Whatever amount of money that you wish to give is between you and God, but we should not turn giving into a legalistic prescription.

The Lord himself gave the command in the gospels of secret giving, Matthew 6:3.

If one is giving 10% and everyone knows that one is giving 10%, that would be violating the Lord's command would it not?

Having said that, when I was in AOG Bethany and tithing became mandatory a member brought up this scripture. Water off a duck's back.

I have not researched the statistics recently, but I recall that a few decades ago the average Christian contributed about 2.5% to the church or only 1/4 of a tithe............ I just checked and a 2016 article in the relevantmagazine website still claims the average Christian donates only 2.5% of his/her income. Meanwhile, a Christianity Today article from 2011 states 4% for Evangelicals and 2.43% average for all Christians. (Again, roughly that same 2.5% average figure.) I suppose that Evangelicals can feel a little better at 4%, but this is still far less than the 10% tithe laid out in the Old Testament.

Are Christian's who do not make God First with the tenth of their income under a curse. Has that Christian(s) initiated judicial blindness (God sees to it that your spiritual insight gets worse because of your heart hardiness when you reject truth) (Romans 11:7-8).

(According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear unto this day (refers to a condition that will not correct itself, but will actually grow worse). Romans 11:8

For if God spared not the natural branches (Israel),
take heed lest He also spare not thee. Romans 11:21

For if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you either. Romans 11:21 NIV

What test is used in the bible to see if you are in faith?
Answer...Luke 16:9-13

Christians are tested with the least in the Kingdom of God which is money.
Considering what Jesus has said here (Luke 16:9-13 NKJV), I think it would be difficult to overstate the significance of this down to earth, practical teaching, that applies to everyone. If a person cannot be trusted with money, and in any capacity, Jesus plainly says, he cannot be trusted with Salvation, i.e., "true riches." In view of the seriousness of what is being said, we would do well to heed carefully.

In these passages (Luke 16:9-13), Jesus is saying that irrespective of how loudly and how often we profess our Godliness, if it does not show up in our practical, every day living, and especially in the matters of money, and our responsibility toward others, our profession is vain. This statement is plain and clear, if we are unfaithful in these things. "Who will commit to our trust the true riches?"

To paraphrase Paul, is this why Christ freed us from the law? Only to be subjected to more laws?

First of all, nowhere in the Bible are Christians instructed to tithe. The tithe was a tax system in Israel under the Old Covenant.

Second, if you're so big on tithing, then why stop at 10%? Why not pay all the tithes as the Jews were required to?
