Someone on a mb was telling me something and another poster told him it was Arianism. I am having a hard time finding out what this means. I am fairly new to pc, I have tried to google it.

I was raised SB, and am a christian. I immediately thought of what was called the arian nation group a few years ago. omeone told me it has nothing to do with said group. I am curious as to what faith or religion this pertains to? I also wonder what it means. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

This is from the Catholic Answers Online site:

Arianism (4th Century):
One of the greatest heresies the Church has ever fought was Arianism. Arius taught that Christ was less than divine, that he was a creature made by God. By disguising his heresy using orthodox or near-orthodox terminology, he was able to sow great confusion in the Church. He was able to muster the support of many bishops, while others excommunicated him.
Arianism was solemnly condemned in 325 at the First Council of Nicaea, which defined the divinity of Christ, and in 381 at the First Council of Constantinople, which defined the divinity of the Holy Spirit. These two councils gave us the Nicene creed, which Catholics recite at Mass every Sunday.

It's early church history. Most have not heard of it.

An author with the last name Gonzalez I have heard has written good books on Church history if you want to read up on it.
Also, Paul Maier has an excellent translation of Eusebius' "Church History" which covers up to some time in the 300s I believe.

The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church is a fantastic resource also.
