Today, a friend called me and asked me to come over to the group home she runs and talk to a new resident there. This is concerning to see if he's saved, and if not, to introduce him to the gospel. During the brief time I had to talk to him, I found out that he is a Mormon (or at least has it in his background).

At one point I asked him if he were to die and God were to ask him what reason should He let him into heaven, what reply would he give Him. He answered with something about "deserving". So if I had to guess, I would say that he is not saved. I also talked to him about Jesus' death and resurrection, and he also included that in the answer he gave me to the question I posed to him. (though he did not enunciate it)

I really need your prayers and advice on how to approach him. I'm hoping to visit him again tomorrow. Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you!

If he is in fact LDS then you can be certain that he he is not saved. The LDS are a non-christian religion that uses almost all the same terminolgy as christians but infuse them with different meanings. It is a works based faith that teaches that jesus died only to pay for adam's sin and that the individual beleiver must make atonement for their own sins. they believe that god was once a mortal man who earned his way to godhood. that jesus was begotten of Mary thru a physical sexual union with god the father, that he is our elder brother and example to follow but not our personal savior. They also believe that LDs males can someday become Gods themselves.
The bible to them is god's word only so far as it is "correctly translated" so you can not witness to them from scripture. The only approach really is to force them to look at thye true meaning of the cross. Unless he has been witnessed to by other christians then he has never really heard the gospel message.

I live in area that is almost 80% mormon,so i deal with this nearly everyday. They are by and large good, kind, generous, wonderful people who have been completely deceived.

I will pray for you. May god give you the patience and perseverance and guidance needed for this witness.

God Bless
Jax

Trent,

I used to pastor a church in Idaho in a town that was 80% LDs and if I can offer one bit of advice.

1.) Stick to the gospel and share it in a very clear and concise manner dealing heavily with what Grace is. Mormons have a different definition of Grace. They believe is it the power to live right. This is a perversion of Grace. Grace is underserved favor which includes forgivness of sins and the imputation of the righteousness of Christ to the believer.

2.) If you discuss LDS doctrine like the Trinity, the nature of God, Baptism etc. dont get distracted on a rabbit trail. Find one issue and stay focused on it. They have a different definition for God, the Trinity, salvation, etc. When discussing with a Mormon is it easy to get sucked into a random doctrinal argument. Avoid the temptation, pick and issue and make your case with the Word of God.

3.) Don't argue and realize that God may be using you to plant seeds of doubt about Mormonism and seeds of Hope in Christ!!

God bless you bro!

I guess a BIG thing here is if this gent bases a LOT of his "faith" on the Book of Mormon. IF this is the case, then tred careful as to not confuse or insult him. My few encounters with mormons and after doing a bit of research indicates that mormons in general hold the book of mormon higher in authority than the OT and the NT.
I would go in that direction first. Just basic questions and let him answer with his heart.
Then just tell him the Truth my friend, unbiased, unabashedly...the Truth. The Truth includes the fact that the book of mormon is a man made book...just like Harry Potter novels.
The Truth will set him free! :)
