So here's one of those amusing moments in ministry. I've decided, on Sunday, to preach on the line of Psalm 98 which encourages us to "make a joyful noise," and preach on the use of music and singing in worship. I do have to preach at the early service, which has no music or singing... I might have to modify the sermon slightly for them!

I'm tempted to point out the rubric in the prayer book which gives us the option of singing the psalm, but not saying it.

More seriously, I am inclined to suggest that a little music is good for the soul...

Any chance the sermon was recorded?
I would love to hear it.

Sadly, I don't have the technological capacity for that, but you can read the text here: Joyful noise

(The early service got an extra paragraph encouraging them to think about what use of music might be appropriate for them, without trying to duplicate the later service. And, to their credit, over coffee afterwards, we were talking about things like, maybe a bit of quiet instrumental music as they gather? And so on).

Distractions: I'm sitting here trying to pray and write a paper and the USAF is conducting super-sonic training runs over my neighborhood. Although, I did buy a house only about a mile from a major East Coast Air Force Base. So I can't complain too much.

Been there done I was 15 years in the Royal Australian Airforce and was based at two different bases that flew jets and bombers. You got used it during the day, but when the night exercises were on it was a little more difficult.

This vestment has been getting a lot of commentary in some of my circles. It is a black chasuble dating to 18th century Poland; thus only appropriate to the Requiem Mass. And it is a fiddle-back (which are fairly controversial and tend to denote clergy on the far fringes of AngloCatholicism). From what I have learned over my several years in this forum, I am guessing that none of our Australian friends would ever see this worn in a church. The only possible improvement I could think of to better suit this to an Anglican context would be to replace the three faces at the bottom with those of the Oxford martyrs.

I have seen such a thing (or a black fiddleback chasuble, anyway) in a cupboard in a vestry of an Anglican parish, but I have never seen one worn during a service.

It's fascinating as a historical piece but I would never wear it. Given it'd be at a funeral, the imagery would likely be very disturbing and pastorally inappropriate for the grieving people gathered.

That particular vestment is rather clearly teaching that the souls of the departed have gone to purgatory to me. That's always a touchy subject with Anglicans. I would not wear it either and was writing in jest when I mentioned putting the Oxford martyrs on it.

But how common is a requiem Mass anyway? I've never seen one in person. I did not ask for the service after the death of my wife either.

I'm not sure I read purgatory clearly, as distinct from hell, in the imagery. Either way I don't like it!

How common is a requiem Mass? Not that uncommon on the more catholic side of things, I'd think. I did one just after Easter. In the parish where I served my first curacy (which was not the parish with the black fiddleback in the cupboard) they had a set of vestments only used at funerals; ivory with black and gold trim.

I had noticed your status change, Shane; I'm very sorry to hear of the death of your wife.

If you look closely there is water -and possibly blood- flowing from the sacred heart of Jesus into the fire. And I think that the figure in the middle is much higher in the flames is meant to communicate that he is rising out of purgatory.

In my lifetime I have been to four in the Roman Catholic Church and three in the Anglican Church. The three in the Anglican Church one was for a departed priest and others were a brother and sister Franciscan.

A recent picture of my daughters. Yesterday was Father's Day here in the US. I cringe whenever the civic stuff gets mixed in with the liturgical calendar and, naturally, my priest had a special collect for Father's Day.
