RTH:
I would not feel guilty for your children going to bed hungry! Not a bit! They chose not to eat what you had provided, and being hungry is the consequence. If they dislike the consequences, then they will learn to eat the food you provide! (And I am sure that you are providing good food!) Their hunger is their responsibility!
My mother always told us that she didn't run a restaurant, we could eat what she prepared or not!
Even though I don't have children, I know what you are talking about. Before I got married, I never bought cokes or much candy--but my husband likes to keep that in the house. He just eats it when he wants to, but I eat it because it's there! So, I have to try to keep out of his stash of goodies.
I'm glad that y'all are getting moving some. It's good for you, even if you're not seeing dramatic weight coming off. We are living healthier lives when we move ourselves around.
For those of you with kids, you could try subsituting some sort of fruit for one of the snacks that your kids ususally eat. There's so much fresh available right now, canteloupe, watermelons, peaches, nectarines, berries, etc. Those are sweets that are good for them and you.
I can't wait until my peppers are ripe, either, RTH! I have about 10 on one plant and a half dozen on the other and they're still blooming. We'll have peppers every day once those babies get ripe--stuffed peppers, roasted peppers, sauted peppers, peppers in our salads. . mmmm. It will be like when I was a kid and we had fresh veggies every day of the week--squash, beans, corn, although when cabbage was in season, it wasn't as great! Cabbage every day gets tiring much quicker than fresh corn every day!
Stephen: Are you taking a cooler of goodies with you on vacation? If you plan on taking drinks, bring along bottled water as an alternative--and other snacks that can be an alternative--grapes, pretzels, apples. With that said, you are on vacation and this is a special time where you should (IMO) have things you don't usually have.
