I'm a bit rusty on this, (it's a LONG TIME since I was a student) but to do a postgraduate degree like PhD you apply to a university who will have certain requirements regarding your qualifications etc. Most Universities have web pages which specify what those are and email addresses to contact them if you have a query. It also gives you an idea of the strengths of that place.
Where are you interested in going and what is your research interest?

That is a big jump in subject topics. I am not sure if you could do a PhD in these subjects with a chemical engineering degree (but don't take my word for it, do look into it, somewhere might take you)

In thr UK it is more common to do a research degree in a topic similar to your undergraduate degree.

You could also of course do a convertion course.

Hope this is useful. :D

Hi I am at uni at the moment, when you say studentship do you mean. A scholarship or like a student sponsership or something completely differnet?

Differnet universities and colleges offer different things. I know of a person that is doing a PhD and their college/university is paying for it.

As for the type of PhD you really need to look at the university/college. They all offer differnt specialist subjects and some are better than others. Sorry if i have mis-read what you said

Hope this helps

i think it means scholarship, the above link is an example and ont worry, believe any help is better than none, i am completely clueless and application dealines are coming and going.

most PhDs are supported by grants so the person you mentioned above is supported by a grant.
