I hadn't heard of it being called tinking. Thanks for the unoffical word I'm working on a scarf right now, though its more of a practice scarf until I get more stitches made. I haven't worked on it in a week, so hopefully I can do some this weekend.

Left off sock knitting for the summer. But now...

Has anyone ever knitted or crocheted with 'plarn?'. Plastic bag yarn? I didn' know this existed, now I want to make a shopping bag out of it.

There are a lot of pretty good YouTube tutorials.

I found instructions for that - hadn't heard it referred to as plarn - and started cutting the strips off the bags and joining them together, but gave up in the end and cleared all the strips out. Did you manage to make a shopping bag?

Not yet...I'm still making plastic strips. Thanks for asking!

Knitting a scarf is a very good way of practising new stitches, but it can take a while.

I love knitting too - it is very relaxing. But I have knitted since my kids were born (4 years now)... I really should pick it up again! It seems like a lot of people in this thread are having the same problem as I am finding the time!

Yes, finding the time is the hard bit. I still haven't picked up all the stitches for the button band of my cardi, simply because I haven't sat down often enough to do it.

Let us know if you do start on something.

Oh yes, I'm still around all right Nota. The problem with knitters and crocheters, especially on Christian sites, for some reason, is that they don't seem to want to talk about it very much. You shouldn't let your status as a newbie put you off starting a thread - you've probably been around longer than I have!

Hi Gillian,

Good to hear from you.
I am only occasionally around, mostly I just read. Log on only if I want to post....

I had never considered the possibility that christians don`t like to talk much about knitting and crocheting, as you mention.
Can`t fathom why if that`s the case.....

About my latest crochet quests : I got into filet - never did any before.
Reading through my mother`s old instruction materials [she was a pro], I figured out the basics of filet. But, as I always wind up doing, I started making my own designs.
I began with a simple border, then I thought of how neat filet would look on curtains. One drawback being, they take forever to finish. The second drawback : I hate counting.
So I decided to work from one side across to the other, repeating the design until I reach the desired width of the curtain, instead of working from top to bottom. Easier for me to count stitches and "squares" that way.
I made a curtain with a rose motif for a friend.
Next I made up a design with flying birds - the first bird curtain turned out great. Now I am close to finishing a second bird curtain with even thinner thread. Switched from 100% mercerized cotton size10 to size30.

Okay, I really got the hang of birds. Am again hankering for something different. Have a butterfly curtain spooking around in my head. My next designing project.

I am having fun!

It`s great that we have this creative power derived from the Creator of the universe himself. Although we cannot create out of nothing like he does, we can use the materials and the imagination he blesses us with.
And the best part : we can share his gifts to us!

Nota is right, it is very difficult to sell handmade stuff, but I like to think that I am blessing someone when I knit something for them.

Maka, just keep on trying and practising and you`ll get better at it every time.

Knitted blankets/afghans are cool....there are lots of patterns for them too.

I am a crochet freak, knitting isn`t my thing.
But both are beautiful.

Thanks ^^ so far I'm liking crocheting a lot. I'm going to keep practicing, if I make something descent I'll post a pic.

I love knitting, but don't get doing it as much as I would like. My current project is a cowl in fuzzy yarn for my daughter. Does anyone else here enjoy knitting?

Gillian

My mother used to knit all the time. I don't, I think it's boring. But she works now, so she told me she doesn't know when she will ever get around to doing it again...

I do!!!! I love doin the french knitting but dont know how to end it like to tie it off from coming undone.

Just cut your yarn, thread the end through your last stitch and pull tight. I love doing it too, but don't like the idea of having to sew it all together to make something.

I learned how to knit about a year and a half ago. I'm not very good, but I did make a really nice scarf. ^^ I tried making a blanket but it didn't go so well. Maybe someday I'll try again.

Hi Maka,

Well done on your scarf! Did you get a picture? Did you finish the blanket you were making or did you give up before you got to that stage? What way were you making your blanket? A lot of people make afghans on circular or magic loop needles. The other popular way is to knit a lot of individual squares and sew them all together. That way they can accomplish a small thing quickly but each small thing goes towards something bigger. The thing I don't like about that is the sewing up - don't like that much at all lol.

Another small project you might like to try is a dish cloth - done very quickly and good for practising stitches.

I used to knit a lot of baby sweaters and hats. Every time I gave a sweater to my friend for her latest addition (she had 4 babies almost back to back), she would insist that I should sell my work. I always said that if I knitted for profit, it wouldn't be as fun and relaxing anymore.

I think I would be the same. Of course, I'm a slow knitter and people would be tired waiting for me to knit them something lol.

I love knitting too. I don't know any women my age who love to knit, and people are quite surprised when I tell them what I do.
At the moment I'm am knitting Harry Potter inspired socks I found on Ravelry. Socks are the best thing to knit, it's so much fun. I learned to knit with circular needles just a few months ago but it has simplified my life, I don't know why I was scared. I really need to finish them though.
