Karl,

Bet you any money you'll find the same problems in America - it isn't 'the great nation' that everyone says it is...

You may have experienced that, but it isn't just an Irish thing - it's everywhere.

I can't wait to move to Ireland - I'm looking forward to the experience. I'm sure that I'd find the same problems in any country - america included (racism is rife there too!)

Don't put down a nation just cos you don't agree with some of it's politics - noone's forcing you to stay there (and heck, you could always move back to Kyrgyzstan) - stop complaining if you're choosing to live there :)

I live in N. Ireland, so I'm not really Irish, but that's besides the point. Yes the place has it's faults, but it's not as bad as you are making out Karl. I am a member of one of the only Protestant families in my estate, yet all my neighbours have been nothing but friendly to us and I have a large number of Catholic friends.

Sure some people give the place a bad name, but I think that people all over the world face the same things, if not worse in some places judging from what I see on the news.

I really want to go to Ireland - maybe I will tag along with Sascha.
I am almost 100% Scottish, but my mom says my real father ( whom I have yet to meet to confirm) had a bit of Irish in him as well.
One day when I do meet him, if I can get a dual citizenship, I am ALL OVER IT! And I'll be Ireland bound!!

Indeed, ever seen South Central LA, Calif? Well, I've seen both Belfast and SoCent, and at least there's some places I'd feel more comfortable with in West Belfast.

Good for you. Make your own decision.

Well, in all fairness, he could be there involuntarily. I lived in W. Belfast as a kid, back in the late 60s/early 70s, didn't have a choice. Would've felt similar to Karl back then, but didn't know any difference!

Still go back to see ol' friends, much is still great there, much improved in last 10 years.

Karl,Ireland's not that bad!

Sure it's not perfect, but not many places are! There are some great people here, Christian and non.

And part of Norn Ireland's problem is insularity, so it is VERY important for new people to come here and others to leave and see the world.

The people here are some of the friendliest I have ever met, I lived in England for 15years and while I love England, N. Ireland is so much nicer. The countryside is also beautiful.

Excellent point! Sooo much is outside the 'troubles', especially up north, eh?

*shocked* "so much nicer" than jolly 'ol England?? :D

Took a peek at ur profile. Geology! How exciting! I worked as a geotechnician here in CA for years, inspecting potential sites for construction, grading, etc. 'Tis a fascinating field. Especially for you, with such things as the Giant's Causeway, etc. BTW, do you think it was really built by McFinn? ;) Isn't there another theory, of it being basalt formations which have been petrified? (I like the McFinn story meself!)

Hiya,

yep, I'm heading off to Oxford in 3 weeks to study geology.

Ireland has some fantastic geology and I have to say the giant's causeway is my favourite place! I'm really looking forward to seeing geology in other places too, and understanding my local geology.

The G.C. was formed by the very rapid cooling of an effusive erruption, and the pillars are just made by the lava contracting and forming cooling joints. The finn mccool story is cool though!

Your work sounds really cool patrick - not sure what 'field i'll go in to, what do you do now?

Ach, the ol' grey mare . . . had to get outta the business, going up & down trenches and over uneven territory did me knee in! Did some lab work for the geotech firm for a spell, that was just as fascinating, doing tests on various samples, extrapolating them from cm's to hundreds of feet, etc. (gee can you see I miss it?!)

Are you in the north now? a few, uh, er, decades ago, spent some time up there. Have you heard anything about the Finucane murderer, Barrett, confessing to it? What's up with that? Who'd confess to premeditated murder? Sounds like a 'faiery story' to me!

Good luck in the university!

Yep I'm in the north, north west to be more precise. I did hear about it on the news tonight, but only the basic details. I agree though, all sounds very odd. It's funny I hadn't realised it was 15 years ago, when you grow up hearing about it you imagine it didn't happen when you were four!

Drogheda, too cool. My great grandfather's family is from Wexford, tho I've never been there.

I spied you have a Pentecostal symbol next to your "name". Cool. One of my favorite worship cds are the Celtic Worship's, with Eden's Bridge. Ever hear them?

Ya gotta check 'em out! They reprise some of the old hymns, with a Gaelic tone. Also have original songs. Very worship-ful. Not contemporary music by any means, but there's a time and place for both, I think.

Yes, I was born at Fort Dix, NJ, USA, just when my parents came back from Korea (da was in the Army).

My da was born in Belfast, Queen Vic Hospital, but he got citizenship from his mum, complicated stuff, as you probably know! He took us back there in the when there was that building boom in Ballymurphy. He thot it would be fun to be a Murphy in the 'Merf'. What a mistake! :D Jest jestin, t'was great times growin' up as a little boyo.

Cool! Of course! How could one not love it! And isn't Maureen O'Hara too much (even for back then!)?

What would your favorite Irish movie be? Actually, mine is a tie between "My Left Foot" and "The Quiet Man".
