Just wondering if there are any people here who did not grow up in the salvos and wondering did you or do you have any problems fitting in? I can be that person who is just too loud to ignore but don't always feel part of the family especially when people start dropping names of past generals or divisional commanders and I have no idea who they are talking about but anyone who grew up in the army instantly knows. Does anybody else experience similar things?

I've experienced it, and not just in the Salvos. Every church I've been involved in, I've had a similar kind of thing happen, where I'm having a conversation with a couple of people, and something that's said reminds them of some person who left years before I showed up, and I end up standing there trying to decide whether I should keep listening to them reminiscing about some person I've never met, or if I should just wander off and come back in half an hour.

I am a first generation salvationist have been involved for about 10 years now. To start with I felt involved when I was young as went to sunday school with friend from school. But then we moved 30 miles away and ended up at a much bigger corps where I never felt that i quite fitted in everyone would meet up on bank holiday monday as families - parents would chat while kids all met up etc. But I am now engaged to a 4th generation salvationist and I have moved across the country for uni and to be closer to him and I now feel like I belong. However, looking at it, it's because I have become "adopted" into my fiances family

I am a first generation salvo with a difference. My mum grew up Salvo, but left soon after she turned 16 (when she returned to church, she went to a pentecostal one).

I find it a bit daunting, but can usually go home and ring my mum (or when my grandma was alive, ring her), and see if the name rings any bells.

i used to be at a corpe that was ull of people that where all related etc, but the one im at is less salvoish. but we still have some of those problems?!!!

it seems to happen at normal churches too, so i dont worry too much, i dont really talk to any one that does it too much.

i hang out at our training college alot, with the cadets etc, and they are all related to alot of people etc, and alot of the top brass seem to be around the place. but yeah i just ignore it all

(who knows if every one will still be related?!)
at the corps I go to we the leader is only a soldier. Thats right not a captain or even a lieutenant (or however you spell it!) A group approached HQ and said we feel God wants to establish a corps in this area and HQ said sure which one of you is going to lead it. Ok so thats a very brief version but fairly accurate.

At the church I attend there are many newbies. There a few "old" families and the Major talks Salvation Army talk with all the terms and I think that probably the majority haven't a clue what he is talking about. I think founders Sunday was probably very educational for those people. My mom went to the army for a few years when she first came to Canada so that helps my terms of reference and she grew up in Nottingham so the English background helps too.,

I grew up with my grandmother, she was Catholic but told me to do what I felt was right, my advice? Just stand up! be loud! and get right in there Or alternatively you could marry soinso's daughter then that gets you an instant name to drop:) just kidding :) I married soinso's Son son now I am soinso's son's wife

I think it can happen in any denomination. I grew up in one denomination so that helped that I recognized some names in it (my parents went there for years and years and my dad was involved in its begninning) but often someone will mention the name of a visitting speaker and everyone gets all excited while there will be those thinking "who on earth is that?" or what is worse go to a regional function and everyone knows everyone. Maybe it is good for us to be aware of so we don't do it too.
