  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This word seems to be thrown around quite alot. I was wondering if you guys could set some good general guidelines for what being and making "anti-Catholic" remarks, or having anti-Catholic beliefs.

I would like to know what to avoid saying or doing myself, and what to watch out for from others, whom post over in PRE, especially in the threads I make.

I read the thread over there and what would be helpful to us is if you have a particular belief that you do not agree with or do not understand how we believe in a certain way then just ask and we will be more than glad to answer your questions and then you can decide for youself.
Tigersnare Remember this is new to me and that I just converted over. I was very devout before in my thinking. I did not change because of something trivial but because I believe in it.
It would also help if one would realize we are not over here attacking you all the time. Just because we defend our position doesn't mean we wish to argue with you all the time.
And most of all it would be nice if you could remeber we are Christians too.....
Thanx for asking what you could do to help.

God Bless

My thread over there did not, for the most part, recieve the answers I was looking for. With experience I am better learning how to ask the question I'm looking for. Look to my new thread to less likely to cause these same reoccuring problems. I am trying to get a good feel for what you guys find offensive, degrading, or just poopy in general. I obviously don't see remarks the way you see them, as you dont see them the way I see them.

So help me....

Tigarsnare .. I don't know if this will help, but try to imagine if you were always misunderstood by part of you family, and part of your family over and over and over again keeps misrepresenting what you believe, what you do, and what you stand for . . no matter how many times you try to correct them, or whatever you say to the contrary . .and they teach others these same misunderstandings and misconceptions about you as well . . .

After a while, it feels like part of you family, who are supposed to be loving and kind towards their brothers and sisters, is anti-you . .doesn't it?

The best thing you can do is to educate yourself as to what Catholics really believe, teach and practice . . and then you will be ready to recognize anti-catholic sentiment from those around you . .

Peace in Him!

Let's try concrete examples.

Not Catholic: "I think the Church was too aggressive in rooting out supposed heresies; even if people are wrong, I believe they shouldn't be killed or harmed for it."

Anti-Catholic: "The Catholics killed 100,000 million Bible-believing Christians during the 1600s."

(I am not making that one up.)

Not Catholic: "I don't personally feel that the Immaculate Conception is logically necessary; I think it is possible that Mary was sinful, too, even though she was redeemed by Christ along with all the other believers."

Anti-Catholic: "Catholics worship Mary! This is wrong because she was sinful and evil."

You get the idea.

Being told we are not Christians for one.
This is hurtful to us.
You have many Faiths and you all consider each other Christian but then we have the constant comment that we are not.
That we worship Saints and Mary when in fact we do not.
These were even misconceptions I held until I was shown otherwise and exactly what they do believe and then I saw it for myself and it made sense.
That we worship the Pope when we do not but instead look to his leadership as being the head of the Church on Earth But the Head of the Church has and always will be Jesus. And we do worship Him.
I s that a start.
In Christ

If you don't want to be labeled "anti-Catholic" dont tell Catholics what they believe...ask.

People tell us we:

- Worship Mary
- Worship Statues
- Commit idolatry
- Make the Pope equal to God

...etc, etc, etc...

My church friends (non catholic) used filled my mind with ideas on anti-catholic beliefs and told me how catholic worship mary and pray to saints. I didnt doubt at all at that time and I accepted what they say. Until one day I really got fed up by their gossips and decided to find out on my own.

It's so coincidental (i think it's God's plan) that I happened to know an Indian friend who is a catholic. She brought me to her church and willing to be my God-mother and sponsor for RCIA. It's really an eye opener and I am glad to say that I am proud of being who am I now, a catholic, after knowing more abt catholicism. I cant wait for the arrival of my confirmation this coming June. Yippee!

Sometimes I just feel that by just sitting and thinking about what other says is not enough and will do no good. If really want to know something, we got to take the first step in finding it out and not just let others ideas filled your head. God helps those who help themselves. :p

That reminds me: Where does one get a Catechism? I'm tired of having to always ask Catholics what the Church teaches.
You can save some money and get a used copy on Ebay. They also have tons of other Catholic books, but you have to be careful some are better then others.

"Anti-Catholicism" can be subtle to the casual observer.

In San Fransisco one year, there was a parade of homosexuals dressed as Catholic nuns, some dressed as pregnant Catholic nuns.

(Could there be a parade of men dressed as female slaves of the South?)

Key words to be aware of: "The Church of Rome", "Romanism". "Romists", "papists"...
These are often in anti-Catholic jargon.

"Catholics say Jesus is in a piece of bread."
(This is NOT what Catholics say. There is NO bread when the words of consecration are spoken.)
"Catholics worship a piece of bread, so this is idolatry."
(There is NO bread.)
"Catholic priests are using magic when they say they change the bread and wine into the Body and Blood."
(The priests do not change anything. The HOLY SPIRIT by His power causes the change.)

"I'm not 'anti-Catholic', but I am opposed to many of the RCC doctrines of men. Let me tell you..."

No official Church Document refers to the Catholic Church as "the Roman Catholic Church"; that is a term invented by members of the Church of England.
Why should the Catholic Church accept someone else's name for Itself?
(I see that some Catholic churches in the U.S. do use this phrase, but it is NOT official. The front cover of the CHurch's Catechism says quite clearly, "The Catechism of the Catholic Church")

**************

Here is MY suggestion to you, tigersnare, when you put a post on a board, any board, and if you see the answers are leaning in a direction away from the answer to your intended question... you stop them in their tracks.
For example, on the thread on PRE. You see many answers which speak of the Catholic Church.
"Excuse me. I didn't ask you to share your opnion on the Catholic Church. Don't tell me what you don't like about the Catholic Church. If you tell me what you don't like about the Catholic Church, then tell me what you don't like about EVERY OTHER Christian faith, so that the only Christian faith "left" is the one you're in. Why must you single out the Catholic faith? Tell me about YOUR faith."

Peace be with you, tigersnare. I do realize that you are being fair to all Christians.

Yea I have to agree. When someone goes out of their way to make sure they use "Roman" Catholic or when they use Catholic church. They are being insulting letting us know that they do not think we are a real Christian Church. (Which cracks me up because we are THE Christian Church.)
