Hmmm. I'd like to see at least one counseling PM thrown in before official infractions begin. I, for one, may make an honest mistake, for which I'd like to be corrected rather than penalized. However, I realize that I am responsible for knowing the rules, which I am soon to review.

So, not to muddy waters or go off topic, but long ago I once suggested that there be some kind of limit to how many times a person can report anything but trolling.

It would prevent serial reporting and people who report everything under the sun would have to really think how to use the limited reports they have. Reporting would no longer be a recourse for the little things because it would be reserved for the big stuff by the reported themselves.

It would probably involve code so it likely is not something that could be done right away. But it may make the system run more smoothly and prevent overtaxing of the staff (since that is always at low manpower compared to demand)

But something like you can only report a post once every two weeks or once a week or even once every 5 days. That would end serial reporting. And if a thread is going crazy staff is going to have to clean it up anyhow, so every violation is not going to need to be reported in those cases since clean-up with find them.

But in some cases high percentages of the reports are generated by and from a low percentage of posters.

And if something is really bad multiple people will report it anyhow. Mods could have unlimited report ability in order to make sure they can get trolls and profanity marked and have a record of it.

Once you get this system up and running and work things out and the database is better and you can add code and such it might be something worth kicking the tires on in a limited test area to see if it helps. Less reports frees up mods to post in the areas they moderate and make a difference day to day in that way. I know when I was a mod, having time to post in the forums themselves was something I missed a great deal.

In theory, limiting the number of reports and by extension the ones getting made being about serious stuff...will limit the number of warnings and infractions, make members deal with day to day problems with each other as Christians or choose to push it into conflict that will get all sides banned. No more massive runs of spite reporting and feuds that generate dozens of reports and 4-5 staff actions (warning or infractions) over a month or two.

Sorry if this is off topic, just a thought for long term how to address some of the concerns about how warnings and infractions build up.

oh my I have to comment on those adorable babes Dave, how absolutely precious!!!!

I like your idea too!

Little Lily, those are her baptism and Easter afternoon at grandma's. She is climbing everything and keeping me busy. She loves to dance. And sing, she is really behaved in Church but when everyone stops singing she is kind of offended the song ended and sometimes keeps going. 14 months old...whadda do but marvel at the joy and love...and keep her from eating non-food :)

So funny, on facebook my sister wants pictures of her everyday.

As far as the idea...it is a long term thing, requires code probably and would need to be tested in small chunks first. Just a thought...you know, Ideas are free good Ideas cost 25 cents :)

ah yes, i knew it would eventually come back to that.."you know that we don't have the manpower to do what you are asking me to do."

and now that someone has seen the light, take a trip back back into your Admin archives and fire the person who suggested that 50-75 + staff members was way too many staffers to have on board to handle the needs of CF. ^_^ and then fire the person who said we don't need Admins. because if you let that person stay on as staff, they will find a reason to eventually eliminate all positions except their own.
Sounds just like our NHS at this present time, Pam! They keep cutting back on front line staff but the number of managers stay the same because they're the people deciding to cut back on staff!!

as far as staff , we do have enough right now to do all the staff requirements we have, and we always are training more:)
Yet I see but one in trainee in the staff list. Guess the training staff are a tad under-occupied at the moment!
(But then - you knew I would probably comment on that, didn't you? ;)

I also suggested this at one time - I think it's the only way to limit spite reporting. I remember too well when a member spite reported every single post on a particular thread. It generated about 20 reports in less than an hour nearly all of which were NV'd but it took up my entire afternoon.

Hmmm. I'd like to see at least one counseling PM thrown in before official infractions begin.
Fact is that a warning is a CPM and has always really been so. They got taken into account when deciding to escalate the action. So in reality, there was just two levels of warning before you got moved on to an infraction.

Speaking as the original author of this protocol, it was actually designed for a forum that has the following stats
~~ Members: 6,914
~~ Active Members: 628
~~ Between 300 and 500 members and guests online at any time
~~ Staff is 3 admins and 4 mods, 2 of whom are on long term sick leave.
~~ We average about 2 reports a year from members but about 5 advertising spammers a week.
The place hums along like a little bee and is no problem at all but then the topic is gardening so it's not quite as contentious as a Christian discussions! You can see the original here. (and yes, I'm Daisees!)

Nevertheless, I'm both chuffed and amazed that it has been applied on CF.

On the manpower question, it must be noted that twice in a row now, when I have noticed trolling done on CF and have tried to PM staff, I have seen that there is only one staff member online at the time. It seems to me that CF must be seriously understaffed at this point.

I love this site! it is so much more charitable when it comes to defining what is an infraction and giving people the appropriate number of warnings before a permanent ban. Some us new to these forums sometimes become very passionate about a particular topic or issue, and before you know t we might say the wrong thing. At least this site has well defined policies.
