I hope I am not discouraging you. You seem a little discouraged, and so I just wanted to encourage you to keep posting. I like the questions you ask and you have an ability to engage people in conversation, so you should definitely use that.

My prayer is that truth will prevail without me. It will take a miracle to change some hard heads and hard hearts. I can't do it just by pointing out what the bible says.
If I do point out the truth, the uncaring people will tear the church apart, rather than admit that the wages of sin is death, not eternal torment.

I am incredibly discouraged. I want to bring the message of life and hope to my town, but my experience here has me dreading the results. It would rip the church in two, and I don't want that.

Yes, but you can help people to build on love and humility, instead of theological arguments. Then they'll be founded upon the rock. No one will be able to hoodwink them, and they will not only listen to sound doctrine but will declare it. Watch out for false prophets of course, people who prey on vulnerable churches. They are hard to identify except by fruit, but they have a lot to do with our current predicament. You will find yourself in opposition to them when you push love and humility. You will be like Gamaliel in Acts 5 when he stood up on behalf of the apostles, and when people panic over something someone says or believes you will say "if this plan or this undertaking is of men, it will fail;" and it will.
