Why are so many who support gay marriage opposed to polygamy? What is the problem if all parties are consenting adults? I might disagree from a religious perspective, but I don't feel the need to regulate it from a legal perspective.

I'm completely in favor of both.

Personally, I'm not inherently against it. Primarily, I don't think the current legal framework in regards to marriage will really work properly when it comes to polygamy. If the law is that everyone is married to everyone else in a polygamous marriage (in terms of gov't, marriage should create a single economic unit) and there's a workable framework for next of kin issues, divorce, taxes etc, then I don't have an issue.

It's just a different issue, which gets annoying when people try use a slippery slope argument.

Absolutely. It is a totally different issue, and if a polygamous rights group wants to go ahead and argue for their rights, let them have at it. <shrug>

Why are so many who support heterosexual marriage opposed to polygamy? If they think a man should be able to marry a woman why are they against a man with many wives, or even a woman with many husbands?

So, 4 Supreme Court judges support discrimination based on sexuality? In 2013?

That this vote was not 9-0 is shameful.

There was some belief that the Court didn't have jurisdiction. If you read the decision and the dissent, most of the dissent was similar to the decision on the Prop 8 case. Alito's dissent did go into further issues, but only Thomas joined him on those. Roberts didn't believe that the Court had jurisdiction over the case due to lack of standing and only joined in Part 1 of Alito's dissent.

Countdown to polygamy.

Ten ... nine ... eight ...

Since straight marriage leads to gay marriage, and gay marriage leads to polygamy, it is clear that in order to prevent polygamy from becoming legal we must attack the source - straight marriage.

(Slippery slope... or double-edged sword?)

A lot of people aren't, but there are some who have concerns over the rights of individual parties in a polygamous marriage.

I'm not opposed to any of them from a legal perspective.

Most people I know who support gay marriage are not opposed to polygamy in principle. The opposition comes in regarding forced or coerced polygamous marriages between older men and girls, that sort of thing. But not polygamy on the whole.

Segregationists in the South had similar reactions to the Civil Rights Act.

Perhaps those who feel this way can back up their talk and actually leave this country?

Naa most wouldn't do that, it would cost too much to stand by those convictions.
