  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Marjorie that is beautiful! You are right!

Now one of these days I would love to do in Hebrew what we have done in this thread.

When you do tell me; I grew up singing Hebrew hymns.

Mi chamocha ba'elim adonai?
Mi kamocha nedar bakodesh, norah t'hilot oseh fileh?

Who is like you, O Lord, among all the gods?
Who is like you, glorious in holiness, fearful in strength, doing wonders?

V'ahavtah et adonai elochecha b'chol l'vavcha u'v'chol nafshecha u'v'chol m'odecha.

And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.

Shema yis'rael adonai elohaynu adonai echad. Baruch shem kevod malchutoh l'olam va'ed.

Hear O Israel: the Lord is our God, the Lord is One. Blessed be the name of His glorious Kingdom, forever and ever.

Adonai sifitai tiftach ufi yagid tihilatechah.

Lord, open my lips and my mouth shall show forth Your praise.

oh, I think you have just found a new best friend! I would love to learn. The only thing I know is...Baruch haba beShem Adonai!

"Adonai sifitai tiftach ufi yagid tihilatechah" -just wonderful. Now I have to figure it out. Pronounciation wise it isn't too difficult (my boss is Israeli) but I have a lot of learning to do!

Thank you so much for this! :wave:

Also one for us liturgical types to love...

Kadosh Kadosh Kadosh
Adonai ts'vaot
M'lo kol ha'aretz kevodo!

Holy Holy Holy
Is the Lord of Hosts
Heaven and earth are full of Your glory!

(and yes it is an essential part of the Jewish liturgy)

That's right.

"Hosanna in the highest" as well correct?

(my favorite paschal hymn)

The angel cried to the lady full of grace: "Rejoice, rejoice O pure virgin! Again, I say rejoice! Your son is risen from His three days in the tomb. With Himself He has raised all the dead. Rejoice, rejoice O ye people!" Shine! Shine! Shine, O new Jerusalem! The glory of the Lord has shown on you! Exult now, exult and be glad, O Zion! Be radiant, O pure Theotokos, in the resurrection of your Son!

Wow, that is so, so beautiful.

The Magnificat
Magnificat anima mea Dominum;
Et exultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo,
Quia respexit humilitatem ancillae suae; ecce enim ex hoc beatam me dicent omnes generationes.
Quia fecit mihi magna qui potens est, et sanctum nomen ejus,
Et misericordia ejus a progenie in progenies timentibus eum.
Fecit potentiam brachio suo;
Dispersit superbos mente cordis sui.
Deposuit potentes de sede, et exaltavit humiles.
Esurientes implevit bonis, et divites dimisit inanes.
Sucepit Israel, puerum suum, recordatus misericordiae suae,
Sicut locutus est ad patres nostros, Abraham et semeni ejus in saecula.

Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto.
Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

Translation:

My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
For He has regarded the low estate of His handmaiden,
For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name.

And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with His arm:
He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalted those of low degree.
He has filled the hungry with good things;
and the rich He has sent empty away.
He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy;
As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to His posterity forever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

"Hosanna in the highest" as well correct?

Hosha'na is a word used specifically during the Sukkot holiday... along with the waving of palms (among other branches.)

Significance? Sukkot for Jews is the remembrance of when God led us out of Egypt (and saved us, "hosha'na" means "save us") and we dwelt in booths, tents, temporary shelters... and there GOD came to dwell among MEN in the tent of meeting with Moses.

"Baruch haba beshem adonai" ("Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord") is also said at this time...

Sukkot was considered the most messianic of festivals...

So that explains perhaps the rationale of the Jews who met Jesus with palm branches, crying "Save us, Son of David!" He is our deliverer and Emmanuel, God with us...

Just out of curiosity, have you read anything about St. Edith Stein or "Salvation is from the Jews"? I know they are Catholic but I was just wondering.

There was a Hebrew Catholic conference I was going to attend last March but last minute I couldn't.

Thank you for the explanation. It truly is wonderful and I hope you share a lot of the wealth of knowledge on this forum because I know I can read about this for hours. I've read many accounts of Jewish completion through Christianity. Perhaps it is part of my Jewish blood or just a love I have of the Torah, but I can't get enough of the subject.

Yes! The college I am going to next year is Catholic and I was excited to see that a building was named after St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross/Edith Stein.

St. Maximillian Kolbe, of course, is also of interest.

From an Orthodox viewpoint, I also am very interested in St. Maria Skobtsova (who died for protecting Jews) and Fr. Alexander Men' (who was Jewish by ethnicity.)
