For years I have heard and participated in debates about who the Germany Nazi party was most like in the current political culture of the US

There have been numerous comparisons.

Well I was in Berlin last week and spotted something interesting.

This is the former Reichstag, now called the Bundenstag:

IMG_6998.jpeg

Off to the right of the building is the road leading to the Brandenburg Gate.

IMG_7006.jpeg

It is the center of Berlin police politics. And always has been.

On the road between these two monuments of Germany is a memorial for those murdered by the Nazi party.

Read what it says.

IMG_7003.jpeg

That I find very interesting.

Your observation is based on a misinterpretation of tge word 'socialusm,' fueled by manipulative conservative demagogues and media propaganda.

Call America 'socialist' in any other country and be laughed out of the room.

No - my observation is based on a memorial to millions who died under national socialism according to the country where it happened..

The word socialism has a plethora of meaning depending on who you are speaking to and if they are defending or criticizing the term. Media has little to play with my position because quite frankly, I don't watch cable news - I don't even have cable
Call America 'socialist' in any other country and be laughed out of the room.
That is because America is a Representative Republic. But you would have to be in denial or completely ignorant to not recognize the socialism factions in our system.

There is the DSA - Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) - Working towards a better future for all.

There is sitting members of Congress sympathetic to the socialist

You have another member of Congress that openly runs as a socialist

So this is a completely valid point.

We are the only industrialized country in the world that doesn't have universal healthcare.

Many developed countries have paid maternity/paternity leaves. Union membership much higher than the 10% and falling we have.

To call our country's threadbare social safety net under continuous attack by oligarchists and conservatives "socialism" or "national socialism" is an insult to every American who struggles to put food on the table despite working one--or more--jobs.

What's more, it gets more threadbare every year. My state just abandoned work limitations for 14 year-olds!! What will keep those of you who scream "socialism" to stop attacking decency? Sweatshops for kids? That's what the conservatives in my state seem to be aiming for.

What does that have to do with the Germans calling the deaths under National Socialism?

What do the photos and memorials have to do with being "most like in the current political culture of the US?"

Read the whole quote, not just part of one sentence. If you need further explanation, I'll be happy to provide it.

I read every word of the OP and in the pictures. I saw nothing indicative of the current political culture of the US.

By 1955, I read, and there were fwiw books out to the same idea,
the untied states were called just like germy a police state already then.
And so it has developed, and so it is, and so it continues (getting worse daily).

What resemblance does the Democratic Party have with National socialism?
None.
Absolutely, positively none.
Please do not spread lies.
That's true.

Although the National Socialists were leftist and collectivists, they were not marxist, hence why communists hated them. Their form of socialism is much different.

There is one huge difference. The Republicans are the ones suppressing democracy. Manipulating districts. Supporting loudmouth demagogues inciting hatred and discrimination while telling the majorities--white Christians--that 'they' are the oppressed ones.
And why? Because they can't discriminate against gay people? Because they don't want to allow others to interpret morality differently from them? Give me a break.
I am a white Christian woman (decidedly not fundamentalist) who is disgusted with their feigned claims of oppression.
There's a simple solution: mind your own business.

Read what it says.
According to this website the Nazi party started as a socialist oriented party.
"In 1919 a Munich locksmith named Anton Drexler founded the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (DAP; German Workers’ Party). Political parties were still a relatively new phenomenon in Germany, and the DAP—renamed the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP; National Socialist German Workers’ Party, or Nazi Party) in 1920—was one of several fringe players vying for influence in the early years of the Weimar Republic."

Labels go misused or uncorrected all the time. Maybe that's what's happening here.

Yes, the National Socialist workers party (NAZI). We’re National Socialists

They self identify as such.
By the time Hitler got control of the party, it was fascist, not socialist.

Were the Nazis socialists? No, not in any meaningful way, and certainly not after 1934. But to address this canard fully, one must begin with the birth of the party.
In 1919 a Munich locksmith named Anton Drexler founded the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (DAP; German Workers’ Party). Political parties were still a relatively new phenomenon in Germany, and the DAP—renamed the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP; National Socialist German Workers’ Party, or Nazi Party) in 1920—was one of several fringe players vying for influence in the early years of the Weimar Republic. It is entirely possible that the Nazis would have remained a regional party, struggling to gain recognition outside Bavaria, had it not been for the efforts of Adolf Hitler. Hitler joined the party shortly after its creation, and by July 1921 he had achieved nearly total control of the Nazi political and paramilitary apparatus.
To say that Hitler understood the value of language would be an enormous understatement. Propaganda played a significant role in his rise to power. To that end, he paid lip service to the tenets suggested by a name like National Socialist German Workers’ Party, but his primary—indeed, sole—focus was on achieving power whatever the cost and advancing his racist, anti-Semitic agenda. After the failure of the Beer Hall Putsch, in November 1923, Hitler became convinced that he needed to utilize the teetering democratic structures of the Weimar government to attain his goals.

Like many socialist organizations outside of Russia, the focus started off to be about workers. Hitler used that party and altered it. And the German people didn't see their democracy go away.
