  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So far, God of Promise and Christ of the Covenants have both gotten more than one recommendation.......

Keep the suggestions coming!

again, I'm looking for something that will focus on reformed theology as a "whole", not just TULIP.

......and a sidenote that I'm not the most intellectual person, so it's got to be something that a "layman" can understand. I don't need "easy"......just not masters level reading. I'm not going for a doctorate or anything, I just want to understand covenant theology better!!

Which Horton book should I get?

God of Promise

or

Putting Amazing Back Into Grace

which one will give me a better overview of reformed/covenantal theology?

IMHO, Putting Amzing Back Into Grace is an overview of everything Reformed. Horton spends most of the book talking about vaious aspects of TULIP. He spends a chapter on the sacraments, baptism and communion. He comes from the paedo-baptist perspective, and like I've said, while I wasn't 'converted' to paedo-baptism, I now understand the reasons for it. But in this book, Horton only gives us a taste of covenant theology, when he's comparing dispensational end-times views to it.

God of Promise is exclusively about covenant theology. I don't think he discusses TULIP at all. However, Horton does spend a few pages demonstrating how paedo-baptism and the Lord's Supper fit into covenant theology. Like I've also said, I havn't been 'converted' to paedo-baptism...yet.

Well, gosh...they both sound like what I'm looking for......but God of Promise seems like more of what I need. I just don't understand enough of covenant theology. I think I've got TULIP pretty well understood....at least I can defend it, and have, without feeling like I'm in over my head!

Looks like I'll have to break down and buy both books~(suprise!).......

Thanks for all the suggestions guys!

Well to make things more difficult - my favorite Horton book (and he's one of my favorite authors so I've read several) is We Believe Recovering the Essentials of the Apostles' Creed. OK, so it isn't specifically about the reformed theology - but it is wonderful. He also has a terrific book about worship - A Better Way, Rediscovering the Drama of God-Centered Worship.

I've actually got his one coming from CBD right now!! The tracking site at UPS says that it's out for delivery...and the UPS lady is about four hours late!!! She's usually here by 2:00 PM. Sometimes she doesn't get here until almost 7:00...and it's about 6:40 right now.

I bought God of Promise today at the bookstore. I'm dying to get started but I still have about 1/3 of Piper's book to read so I'm going to put it off to the side and try to pretend it's not here...!

thanks for all the suggestions....hopefully I'll get around to reading them all eventually!
