Hello friend-
Here is the Word of God:
In John 1:12-13, the writer says
"all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God."
In John 3, Jesus talks about the New Birth - of the Spirit. The Spirit, he says, is like the wind, blowing wherever it wishes and drawing people to life.
In John 6, Jesus says that no once comes to him unless the Father draws them. Here also he says what is necessary to be doing the works of God that produce eternal life: to believe in the One the Father sent.
In John 10 Jesus says that his sheep hear his voice and they come when he calls.
In John 16, Jesus says that the Holy Spirit is going throughout the world convicting people of sin, righteousness and judgement in preparation to hear the good news.
In John 20, John says that everything he has written was for one purpose: that those who read it would believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that personal trust in the identity (the Word who became flesh, the Only Son from the Father) and victory on the cross, and that "by believing you may have life in His Name."
In 1st John 5:12, John writes that if you "have the Son you have life, if you don't have the Son of God, you don't have life".
Hebrews 8:8-12 quotes from Jeremiah 31 regarding the New Covenant. Jesus says that the New Covenant is enacted by his shed blood on the cross. Luke uses this language in his description of the Last Supper in regard to the cup, a concept which he likely drew from Paul who write what he had received from the Lord in 1 Corinthians 11:25.
It is personal, relational trust in what the Father has done for you in the life, death and resurrection of the Son that is the basis for your new inheritance. Listen to Paul in Ephesians 1:13-14
"And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory."
There is no mention there of baptism; instead Paul echoes the persistent language of personal trust "faith/belief" in the only provision for sin and eternal life.
As for the quotes from Paul regarding "being baptized into Christ", the word "baptizo" means immersed. In Galatians 3:27 and in Romans 6, Paul closely ties "immersion" not to water, but with the perfect sinlessness of Jesus himself. This is why He can write in Ephesians that we are [currently] seated with Christ in the Heavenlies.
In Romans 8:9 Paul reiterates his letter to the Ephesians, it is the Holy Spirit that Connects us to Jesus, God IN us connects us to the life of God. Peter says as much in 2 Peter 1:3.
Don't get bogged down with proof-texts (short passages of scripture that seem to say one thing or another); instead look at the "big picture" of the good news about Jesus the King: "For God [the Father] so loved the world, that He gave His unique Son, that whoever believes in [the Son] will not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16.) God wants to adopt us into his family, that's what our Christian hope is. Jesus's blood is enough, his blood is your baptism, just as the blood of the lamb in Exodus covered the doors of the Jewish slaves in Egypt to save them from death; just as the blood of the lambs slaughter on Yom Kippur (the day of atonement) covered the sins of the nation, so Jesus's blood "takes away the sins of the world."
There is nothing magical about water baptism; listen to Peter in 1 Peter 3:21:
" and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,"
But Peter identifies where the power comes from "The Resurrection of Jesus Christ" whose blood gives us a "clear conscience before God". It's the personal immersion into the death and resurrection through faith that saves us.
Concerning Abraham, he was brought into the Covenant with God, not by circumcision, which came after the promise and Abraham's personal, relational trust [faith] in Yahweh. That is the very point Paul makes in Romans 4:11.
A final encouragement, here's Paul again in Romans 5:1-5, this is the love of the Trinity for you-
Therefore, since we have been [past tense] justified through faith, we have [past tense again] peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been [past tense] given to us.
By the way, I hope you are connected to a church family that can help you grow in this new life you have received. If so, there's nothing stopping you from being baptized as a "pledge of clear conscience toward God". You could also translate that, a loyalty pledge to your new King!
May the Grace of God in Christ through the Holy Spirit grant you peace and hope-
