All Converts to Orthodoxy...

What attracted you? I have noticed there are a few people here who have converted, and I am so happy! How can we attract others? Is going door to door a possibility? What are the best ways? Sorry for all the questions, but I feel that the Orthodox Church is one of the greatest treasures. Our mother the church is truly the most beautiful bride that we can present to our Lord Jesus Christ. How can we proclaim Orthodoxy to the world?

Please include what unwelcoming barriers and struggles you have faced in becoming Orthodox?

in Christ our Lord,
george

Thankfully the main barrier that I have right now is the 'long' drive. I know I should be thankful that it is only 40 min ( ;) @ Maximus) away. I was also blessed to be a fairly new Christian and as such did not have a lot of misconceptions of what Christianity is to be burned away on my journey to Orthodoxy.

Thanks for the ;) , Oblio (he knows I drive over an hour one way to attend an Orthodox Church).

Man, I wish you lived in my neck of the woods, George. I would go door to door with you! I would love to do that, but I don't have the guts to do it by myself.

What attracted me to Orthodoxy?

It was a combination of things, but, most all of all, I became convinced that Orthodoxy is Christianity, the real deal, the historic faith that has been passed down to us from our Lord Jesus, His Prophets, and Apostles through all the bishops, priests, and other faithful who have gone before us.

I also experienced the Presence of God in the Divine Liturgy and I will never forget it.

I was attracted by the beauty of it, along with the intellectual rigor of it. I was also interested in the Catholic Church at the same time, but some of the beauty of that church that I remember pre-Vatican II seems to have diminished, in liturgy, art and architecture. I was totally blown away by how unchanged everything was in the Orthodox Church. Along with those things, the Truth of it spoke very clearly to me. As Peter Gilquist said, it tied up all the loose ends of protestantism and made everything a seamless whole.

Uh, what they said.

BTW, October 19 is chrismation day!

The light that drew me to Orthodoxy was Fydor Dostoevsky's novels. I loved the vision he had of Christianity and when the opportunity presented itself I began to go to a Russian Orthodox Church to see if Dostoevsky's vision was that of the Church. My first visit I was convinced that I was in heaven!
The road blocks were lack of parishes. I had to drive 2 hours one way to the nearest parish.

I tried to post a response here earlier, but it was very wordy, and something went wrong when i tried to submit it. So I will try to restate it with less words.

I was drawn to Orthodoxy not by doctrinal or historical issues, but by the worship and life of the Orthodox Christian. I was tired (as I believe many people are) of the McChurch atmosphere of my former experiences in non-denominational churches. These services were more like talent shows (sometimes complete with live animals...such as at Christmas).

As to spreading the word? I do not know. I was told once that God prepares our hearts to receive His Truth, and it only happens in His time. I feel this is true. As I look back on my short years thus far, I see the truth in that statement. During my teenage years I underwent a great deal of suffering and heartache. I was brought low and broken. Had I known of the Orthodox Church prior to when I did, I most definitely would have denied it.
I feel a huge step is for the parish to make it's presence known. This method would vary depending on the location of the parish. My sister's church has a bookstore that is an outreach to the African American community. There is a trend among them to get "back to their roots." However, many of them believe this to be in Islam, their bookstore delivers the Truth to them of the deep roots of Orthodoxy in Africa long before Islam was there.
Another important (most important) way of making ourselves known, is by living the Orthodox lifestyle. Cleansing our hearts and guarding them against blemishes that prevent the love of God from shining through us. This alone will draw many people. God is very powerful, and He speaks clearly in the meek and humble ones. Therefore we should go to confession often, and Commune often, and try not to awaken love before love is ready.
Please correct any wrongness I may have written here. :)

Jeff -

I absolutely love Dostoyevsky! I was shaking and had tears in my eyes when I finished Crime and Punishment for the first time. Father Zosima in The Brothers Karamazov was as amazing to me as the Grand Inquisitor was chilling.

What a genius Dostoyevsky was.
