I feel like I lost my livelihood, in retrospect, while he was allowed to live his own life and have "fun," yet he has the guts to tell me that I didn't lose anything. Do my feelings have any validity?
No as much validity as his. In his mind. Same goes for your dad. But the proof is in the pudding.

Do my feelings have any validity?

Our parents, our families, they may not 'validate' us or our feelings. Often, they do not.

But, as children of God, He is the One Who knows and understands us, and gives us the 'validity' that we seek.

(From Ascension Press ... )

How Does God Validate Us?

  1. He Made Us In His “Image And Likeness” (Genesis 1:27)
    • Zephaniah 3:17 – “The Lord your God is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing”
  2. He Loves Us Even When We Sin
    • John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
  3. He Is Always On Your Side
    • Romans 8:31 – “What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who is against us?”
  4. He Has Placed Us In His Family the Church
  5. God Commends Us, We Don’t Commend Ourselves
    • 2 Corinthians 10:18 – “For it is not the man who commends himself that is accepted, but the man whom the Lord commends.”
  6. Ultimate Validation Comes from God, Not Others
    • Proverbs 25:27 – “It is not good to eat much honey, so be sparing of complimentary words.”
  7. He Eagerly Waits to Reward Us
    • Matthew 6:16-18 – “And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

I am sorry for the lack of validation you are presently experiencing from your family members. Many of us have known this kind of lack. But when we belong to God, we learn to look to Him for the validation we are seeking. When no one else may understand, be assured that He does.
