Hello All!

Almost three weeks ago I was called to become a pastor in the Seventh-Day Adventist church.  I had been praying about it, and I wasn't sure how I felt about women in ministry. But God really got my attention and told me to "Go!"  I found this absolutely amazing since I am only a sophomore in high-school.  But God knew me well enough to know that I needed my purpose in life early!

Anyway, I would like to ask for any advice you might have for a young person going into ministry.  School?  Stress?  Anything??

Thanks so much!

1) If it is God's call for your live, do you really have a choice? When you are in God's will things will work out.

2) Pray about it, and ask for confirmation. This isn't a lack of faith. Its a part of developing a strong communication with God that must be maintained in the ministry even more than "regular" life.

3) Satan will attack you more. His favorite approaches are to a) discredit your witness b) make you apathetic "sp" and c) make you prideful of your call.

4) Don't worry about being female, if you know God's call for your life. You will SUCCEED.

It started on a Wednesday. The freshmen and sophomores were going on their yearly campout. I am NOT a wilderness type person, so I wasn't planning on going. Well for some reason when this got around my class was really upset. So...I decided to get outside my comfort zone.

So, I went and I'm SO glad I did. I made some new friends, and bonded so much with friends I already have. We learned TONS about each other. It was awesome.

Well, Sabbath we had church service in the middle of nowhere. I mean, there's 25 members in this church. I was involved in leading song service, a skit for childrens story, and a group that did special music. I was running all over. Well, it was the sermon. I had been struggling with some issues about my opinon about women pastors, because I thought God might be calling me to that particular service. I thought suddently, that could be me preaching someday upfront. All of the sudden I feel this overwhelming presence of God and His love. My eyes were drawn to a wall infront of the sanctuary. There was a banner hung there. It was the Great Commision. I know that we should all remember that, but I felt like it was something special just for me. And that is an awesome feeling. Later, I was sharing my expierence with one of my friends. She told me that she had though, "I bet that's what God would tell Neddie." It gave us both goose bumps.

Since then, my conviction that this is my purpose in life has just gotten stronger and stronger. And every time I tell it again, the faith that God has spoken to me gets stronger and stronger.

So that's how God said "Go!"

well i remember the story of martha on the book of luke, ive used this example alot but i think its so powerful.
jesus and the disciples go to marthas house and martha begins to serve them. shes probly making drinks, food, or who knows what, but her sister mary is just sitting there listening to jesus.
and martha gets angry at mary becuase she has left her to serve alone.
and martha questions jesus, about why he allows mary to be so lasy.
and jesus replies telling martha that mary has chosen something better and it would not be taken from her.

mary was busy serving god, but jesus was not there to be served.
jesus was there to serve, and mary was sitting at the feet of jesus allowing him to speak and pour into her life, allowing jesus to serve her.

before you can do anything for god, you must first go through seasons of just sitting down and listening to god.
you may be called into the ministry, but that does not mean you are supposed to start today or tomorrow. it could be incredibly discouraging and obstructive if you go into the ministry before your ready.

before you venture into the ministry, id say take a few years and spend as much time alone with god and the word as you can. get as close to god as possible, learn the word of god as clearly as possible, become the greatest christian possible.
"you can teach what you should be, you but will transfer what you are"
one of the greatest principles in the ministry, is accomplishing the things you are going to preach and teach before you preach and and teach them, then you will massively more effective. and people will look to you as an inspiration. when you live your preaching as a lifestyle, then your preaching will be powerful.

i was called to preach before i got out of highschool.
i was not ready to step into that role when i was called, but that was when god placed the vision in me, and i have been running towards it ever since.
but i am still in the preperation process.
jesus knew his calling at an extremely young age. so did john the baptist.
these 2 men could possibly be called the greatest men of god to ever walk the earth. i recall no one who had such success in the ministry.
but between the time they received the calling, and fullfilling the calling, there were years of preperation. john was called away from society itself and lived in the wilderness for years where he could be alone with god and be prepared for his future ministry.

you can preach the truth now, but do not take a fulltime ministry upon yourself yet.
let god pull you aside from the hustle and bustle of the world, and prepare you for this work, so he can set you to work when your ready.
i do not beleive the problem in the church is a lack of workers, but a lack of qualified workers.

if you are to be a witness of christ, then you are to tell of what you have seen. you have to get in the secret place of god, receive the message, and then go tell the world, but you cant do this if you do not first take time away from the ministry to be prepared.

when you preach, you will preach that men grow in faith, men live in holiness, men come unto the fullness of god. you will preach any number of things.
but before you begin to preach these things, you must experience and grow in them yourself.
do not attempt to preach them if you are not well aware of them and have not been through it yourself.
thats why you should not seek to become a pastor yet, but begin to prepare now.

Wow! That's powerful stuff! You know, I've been thinking along the same lines. It's like "I need to 'practice what I preach' before I preach!"

God is continully showing me His grace, and His love. He's teaching me concepts of His word, I would've never thought of on my own! And yes, I have years of training ahead of me.

Thanks so much for this! :)

Remember, many are called, but few are chosen.

Even though we are called into the ministry, we must also be chosen by God to fulfill that calling.

God will not chose unfaithful, untrained, untested, or unsubmissive servants, but he will chose unworthy, unselfish, uneducated, and unqualified people!

With ministry comes persecution, rejection, and suffering and we must be prepared and able to take on the responsibilty that goes with it. But remember that God will continue to change and prepare us for the ministry through-out our entire walk. Those that think they have already arrived, are just about to learn and undergo something fresh and new from God.

As far as knowing your calling, it is very simple...
MY SHEEP HEAR MY VOICE

Always choose to listen and obey God even at the expense of upsetting men! And just as the apostles in Acts and Jesus himself did, Follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, and you shall even love those who do you wrong and talk evil against you and you will abide under the shadow of the almighty and no one or anything can do you harm!

I want to pray God's blessing on you as you respond to God's call. I too was called at a young age and have never forgotten that I was called when there was no reason for God to chose me. I was and am only "a child of God" and that is enough for me to serve him.

I would encourage or caution, depends how you look at it, not to be too quick to use the "churchy" language for what God is calling you to. Preaching, serving and discipling is not just done by those who are "pastors". That title carries with it much baggage these days. This may be the role of ministry that God calls you to, but it may be broader or different.

The only reason I share this with you is that I work now with young people and have never been what people call a "pastor". I have seen God call many young people to ministry, and they find what it is by discovering how God has gifted them and by following the passions God has given them.

I thought I was to be a "pastor", but that was the language I used to descibe the call....now I would use the language of call and gifts. God called me to serve Him and he knew and knows what I uniquely bring to full-time ministry. As long as I have pursued His will I the ministry I am a
part of has been the where I needed to be.

Again, this is just a caution or an encouragement.

"I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ."

I feel the calling to preach the gospel, to teach scripture, and many more. I do not however feel the calling to be a pastor. I feel the calling to be a faithful christian. I work in youth ministry not as a pastor, but as a worker.

Keep in mind that you can teach, preach, etc, without being a vocational pastor. This is by no means meant to discourage you, but consider that God may be calling you to something, but don't be so quick to assume its being a pastor. Also, I would allow some time to see if other believers confirm the giftedness in you.
