• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have had ADD since i was 6. Taking perscription drugs for it pretty much corrected it and I did fine through out school.

Now I am 28 and working. Its really hard because the jobs i have gotten hired to do requier me to put stuff in numerogical and alphabetical order it, which i really dont mind doing at all, and i'm good at it. I'm just slower than most people. The lady i worked for would make me feel really really bad. She would say things like "Just because it's getting closer to your time to leave, doesn't mean you can slack off." I am totaly not a slacker. I'm a very hard worker. And because I have ADD I work twice as hard as most people.

Anyone else know what i'm talking about?

Hi Katy,

I know exactly how you feel. I made the mistake of telling my manager that I have ADHD.

Even though he says he understands, it's only the bottom line and performance that counts. Which I suppose is true, but I still find very frustrating.

Is there anything you can do that might increase your efficiency, to make up for the ADD? Since I don't know what you do, that might have been a lame question.

What's coming to mind as I write this is that I should focus more on working as unto the Lord. All I can do is do my best, work as unto Him, and focus on my strengths to compensate for my weaknesses. I'll leave the rest to the Lord.

I can relate to these posts. I'm 27 but never have been diagnosed with ADD but I know I have it. I never wanted to take medication so I never received or saw the purpose of being diagnosed. In school I had work 2x as hard as anyone. In college I couldnt pay attention more than 2 minutes in class and literally passed through with an Accounting degree (at a very prestigious school) by reading books before exams forcing myself to study. Now a few years out of school, and i'm holding some high profile job. I can totally relate, I have a lot of work I procrastinate on, and find it very difficult to follow along in meeting and presentations (even one's i'm doing myself). I have been passed up on a promotion before because I might come off as slow at getting work done, however I have been getting by through keeping the pressure on. I wouldn't tell your boss that you have ADD b/c it might come off as an excuse or another reason to be past up for what you want to do.

just turned 30. As like yourself I was diagnosed with ADD when I was around 8. I was on Ritalin starting in 3rd grade till high school. Around 10th grade my beloved father who I inherited the problem from decided to take me off the meds. I've always had behavior problems in school due to it. Soon after I dropped out of school and ran away from home. I've never been in a situation ever since then that I or my very tiny family could afford meds again. I finally got on track when I got saved when I was around 20. I finally got my ged.(had to take it 3 times) and got into school. College was very hard and I never finished. In the past 10 years I must have been hired and fired or quit 50 jobs.Seriously.

As a matter of fact right now my new job as a server is in limbo.I left work after doing my side work and totally forgot about doing my check out.I left with all the money and credit card recipes. The night manager called me and was like "What did you forget to do tonight" for the love of god I had no idea. I replied "did I forget to clock out?" Once she told me I immediately jumped in the car and raced back to the job. She explained to me that she severed for many years and cant fathom how I could totally forget. Now I have to beg her and the head manager tomorrow for my job and somehow make it sound like I don't have add. I know from more experience then many that you have a better chance at keeping your job being the work place idiot then admitting you have add.

So ya Katy, I know exactly how you feel and you are not alone by any means.
The hardest part for me is that if you passed me on the street most people would think something like " well that's a decent looking gentlemen"
I can score some place in the 120s on just about any iq test.
I'm very well spoken (much better then written lol)
I have a good heart and always have the best intentions for me people around me and my job.
However, sadly intentions don't pay the bills. Having good intentions isn't something that I can put on my resume. lol.

I do have some advice on how I deal with my add. The hardest part and when it affects me the most is when I get tossed a handful of things at once. Its hard because if you are like me or other people with add I've met, we like to tackle each issue from every angle. Like I'll think twice as much about a situation or instance to perfect it then most people will. There lies a serious issue that comes with it mistakes. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that, at least in my case, its better sometimes to do " just a good enough" job instead of the job I could really accomplish.(given enough time)
This might help maybe not but I've never shared stuff like this online before so I feel good about doing it anyway. lol. Good luck and god bless.

You were taking meds since 6 years old?!? That's not right.
I know how you feel. It used to take me hours and hours to write papers because I couldn't concentrate. Oh wait, I still take hours and hours to write papers. Ritalin is a bummer and I'm not in the states so I don't get my proper meds
I just have to try harder every time.

There is not a single person on earth that will make you feel as GOD intended you to feel. A job is to be loved with all your heart. Anything less you are wasting your life. Life meant to be taken at 2.5 miles an hour. Profits at breath taking speed. Get out of the business of profits.

Same here. I know exactly what you're talking about. This is something that I've dealt with my whole life, and most people would have me believe that I was lazy or too stupid to accomplish anything, because of their ignorance.

Your former boss is ignorant of what it's like to have AD/HD and isn't likely an understanding person, so she makes the wrong assumptions that she makes. I know how frustrating it can be for people to make the wrong assumptions about your character due to your condition.

Where are you getting this from? First off, we don't know how much of our lives is controlled by God and how much isn't. If you were to ask a Calvanist, then they would tell you that EVERYONE makes you feel exactly as God intended them to. Ask most protestant theologians, they'll tell you that most of your thoughts are controlled by some supernatural entity and are not your own.

Also, I don't think that a job is necessarily meant to be loved with all of your heart. That's not how most people can live. That might be the ideal thing, but that's not what most of us can have.

Also, try telling someone who's poor and lives in Africa to get out of the "business of profits". I agree that we shouldn't be greedy, but a job doesn't have to be this romantic relationship you have, but just merely a means to an end.
