The other evening I was watching a YouTube video and then I read the comments section and found another example of a naysayer who goes off the deep end and points out what we hear so, so often blaming Christians for many of the ills of the world. He was responding to another person's comment.

"If you need a god to know what's good and what's evil, you are not a human being, but a puppet. I will never harm anybody because i have a CONSCIENCE and not a human made "faith" which killed millions of innocent people the last thousand years. Of course, people who made slavery into a trade (christians and good churchgoers but also muslims) were still "good" for their community, because then, everybody thought that african people were some kind of animals. Women who died because honorable husbands killed them in the name of God, who died because some <staff edit> priests told them they sinned when they had kids out of wedlocks, who died because they were worthless inferior beings, betrayed, sold, shut in convents in the name of God, well, they probably were all sinners and desserved to die according to the nonsense you just wrote. Goodness or evil belongs to human beings, it has nothing to do with God. After all, this movie didn't tell about God, but about people who cared for each other."

I responded with "Christianity should not be judged on the basis of those who claim to be its adherents, when, in reality, they practice the opposite of what it teaches."

At this point let me say I do not take credit for my response for I found this quote on the website I link to below. I wanted to share this for it was as succinct a response I've ever read or heard on the matter of the topic of my post.

Why Are So Many Christians Hypocrites?

Like most of you, at times we are at a loss as to how best to respond to such criticism and for me this was a keeper. Your thoughts are welcome.

I saw your comment on the you tube video. I think you have to realize that people like that are angry because they are desperately afraid that God might exist. I admit that it is my guilty pleasure to sometimes poke them with a metaphorical stick but in general I don't take them too seriously. They are woefully uninformed and usually uninteresting,

God Bless
Jax

Good and evil are inherently theistic concepts in that were were created for the purpose of doing good and evil is the perversion of that purpose. On atheism, our conscience does not reveal what is good and evil, but rather it is just an evolved survival trait that leads us to do things that increase our chance of survival, but they are unable to establish that it is good to survive or that it is evil to do harm. Likewise, the brain is not evolved to perceive the truth, but to perceive what will increase our chance for survival. While it is sad that many people have been killed by Christians over the past thousand years, that number is dwarfed by those who have been killed by atheists just in the past century who were acting according to their consciences. Many Christians played instrumental roles in the abolition of slavery, and there was no atheist movement that helped to bring that about. Slavery was not just limited to Africa, but many million of Europeans were also taken as slaves, while many millions of slaves in Africa were taken by Africans. Christianity does not teach that we are worthless, but just the opposite. While Christians have not had a perfect history, the incredible amount of good that has been done in the name of Christianity should not be ignored either.

Yes, I've heard this comment about Christians being hypocrites all my life. I'm old enough now to have watched people for decades. I'm almost certain ever human being is a hypocrite. No one perfectly follows their own personal ethics their entire life without breaking them and often they change their ethics as they live their life.
If course if their think Christianity is all about God telling us what to do then they don't understand the Trinity and how that speaks that our faith is all about relationships and not rule following.
