WASHINGTON - A new analysis of the most recent abortion data shows that the number of U.S. women having the procedure is continuing its decade-long drop and stands at its lowest level since 1976.

In the year 2002, about 1.29 million women in the U.S. had abortions. In 1990, that number was 1.61 million.

Where are the people who claimed that abortion increased during Bush's presidency?

I think that the reduced number of abortions may be partially due to the use of the morning after pill.

I think that early chemical aboritons (RU-486) are still counted as abortions, but the morning-after pill, which needs to be taken within 72 hours of intercourse, long before a pregnancy can be confirmed, would not be.

There are also many places where abortions are unaffordable or unavailable. I don't think there is an abortion provider in the state where I live. There probably is in a city in an adjacent state about 115 miles away.

This is a very positive trend as long as the additional children who are being born will be cradled in a safety net of healthcare, food, and living assistance if their mothers cannot provide for them adequately.

A true pro-life position extends past the delivery date of the infant.

I am happy that the rates have gone down. But we must work harder to get this number to 0.
with an informative sexual-education given to our children, including the knowledge of contraceptives, this shouldn't be difficult. let us not forget, though, that some abortions are medically necessary. there is no reason, though, that the number shouldn't be much nearer to zero than it is.

Or teach kids how to be more morally responsible.

some of the best ways are for us to financially support programs where the prolifers can offer free baby screenings that include the latest in ultrasound equipment.

because when a majority of the mothers who were looking into an abortion see their little blessing on the screen it changes their heart and most want to keep their gift.the abrtion clinics know this and will not show the baby to the woman on the screen

Why not teach them to wait till marriage to have sex instead? Birth control is evil.

**Laughs so hard he snorts soda up his nose**

My friend, sex and sexual activity will always be around among the young, get used to it. My circle of friends is pretty good, we dont smoke/drink/do drugs/steal and we all watch what we eat, we dont go flying down the street at 100 miles an hour. Yet ALL of us, every last one of the 12 of us has had sex or has an active sex life now. We're the good kids, and all of us have had sex. They've tried to teach us to be "morally responsible". It didnt work. What they NEEDED to do was to provide us with a way to SAFELY indulge in sex, like making birth control (Besides condoms which I feel arent effective enough to be worth it) more effective and getting these protesters away from the clinics that provide services such as abortion and birth control.

You wont stop the sex, I promise you that. The only thing you can do is give young people ways to do it safer.

Glad to hear it. What would make this statistic more meaningful to me though would be to see the number of pregnancies in each of the respective years also. If there were only half as many pregnancies in these years then it would actually be an increase in the percentage of abortions rather than a decrease.

Seeing the stats on the tottal number of pregnancies and what happened with each one of those preganancies would be helpful.

Quoted because it bears repeating. There's a difference between being pro-life and pro-birth.

I'm still pretty sure that the best way to reduce abortions is to reduce the demand for them (that means less unexpected pregnancies) - this is achieved through education about sex, it's implications, and how to approach it sensibly. I'd also suggest that things like confidential doctors visits, subsidised birth control and easily available counselling are things that would have a positive effect.

Because unplanned pregnancies aren't just a teen problem, a good proportion of those women are late 20's/30's/40's and many others are rape or violent abuse victims.

Furthermore its not just a female problem - it takes two and one has to be male, yet we still continue to judge women as the sinners for this.

Glad to see the number is coming down in the states though and i hope it continues to do so, but also glad to see this necessary service still being offered and it is for those who make the decision to terminate a pregnancy to find forgiveness from God and deal with their decision, not for us to judge what they felt they couldn't cope with.

Perhaps if more services & voices of support were offered to women when they find themselves facing this terrible decision the number could be further reduced still.
