Humans just don't think about the effects of their desires on other people, and creating laws to address this lack of thought are simply bound to failure.

Not disagreeing. At all.
But.
To those whom the post is aimed can use this logic to assert that “godless heathen are imposing their hedonistic lifestyle onto the culture...the righteous must fight for what is right!”
(And since many think that they have a book that tells them “what is right”, they think themselves duty-bound to do “make it happen”; totally disregarding their own Deity already tried the “by the book” method to rein in this “free will” stuff!
Maybe God just needed Christians like our present ones to usher in His time?
