  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Funnily enough, Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary also defines Spontaneous Generation as abiogenesis.

Spontaneous generation - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Are there any dictionaries that don't?

Scientific ones. Which is sort of important, since we're discussing science. When you talk about spontaneous generation of the kind Pasteur disproved and you talk about abiogenesis, you're talking about different things. Pasteur's experiment doesnt' factor into abiogenesis.

A Medical Dictionary isn't scientific? We'll just have to disagree on that.

I'm no scientist but it seems odd that a dictionary would describe spontaneous generation as synonymous with abiogenisis. Sure they both concern life arising from nonlife but that doesn't make them the same.
The details are different but concept is the same: life arising from nonlife. It's called "spontaneous generation" when referring to historical beliefs like worms arising from books, and "abiogenesis" when referring to the modern belief of cells arising from chemicals.

The modern abiogenisis hypothesis is not the same as the old spontaneous generation hypothesis. Maybe those dictionaries are referring to an older definition of abiogenisis? I don't know.

That just moves the goal posts. There is not enough time for life to accidentally develop, so we push back the time limits by saying
it came from space.
(bolding, mine)

Do you have some calculations to back this statement up?

Spontaneous generation = complex organisms mysteriously appearing from inanimate matter (i.e. maggots appearing from rotten meat)

Abiogenesis = simple, self-replicating molecules arising from inanimate matter via understood chemical processes (we just don't know exactly how or which processes, if it's true that is)

OK I'll bite!

What would we need to find in order to prove Abiogenesis false? Well we would have to have evidence of a deity first (any deity). then we would have to provide evidence that that deity created all life on Earth.

Let me ask you AV; what would we need to find in order to refute the existence of God?

God isn't a theory or hypothesis.
Now that is what I call a cop out. Since you insist on abiogenesis being false and that God created life then you have to play by the same rules you use on abiogenesis.

I asked you the same question you did but supplanted the word abiogenesis with the word God.

Now since I answered yours why do you shy away answering mine?
