• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

To those in charge, can we take down some of the inactive "stickys" and maybe reduce some of the complexity in this sub-forum?
Or maybe some of them would better belong under "Ask a Calvinist" ...?

Okaaay. . .make some suggestions and I'll see what I can do. I think some of them would go well in "Ask a Calvinist" and perhaps the old "Dining Hall" can go (which reminds me that nobody's posted in the new one for a looong time). I think I might be able to remove the "Need Mods" sticky--but then you all wouldn't have a reminder that I'm the only mod here and that I'd love to have some help! Maybe we can have a deal--if one of you puts in a mod app for the Ecumenical team to help me out here and in another forum or two perhaps, I'll try and get rid of that sticky for you!

To start, take away the following stickys:

THIS ONE: what would you like to see added
2 Need Moderators
3 I just wanted to share
4 IBM and Baptism....
5 An Announcement
6 Please Note
7 ATTENTION all Semper Posters

archived, deleted whatever. The other stickys have SOME potential relevance or activity

of course this is a request, not some demand

I'll see what I can do. . .personally, though, I rather like the "Just wanted to share" thread--that's the testimony of being led to the doctrines of grace thread, right? I'll see what I can do about the others.

Yes, possible deletion:
"What would you like to see added?"
"Need moderators"
"Please note the addition ..."
"ATTENTION all Semper Posters"
Original "Dining Hall of the Reformed"
"An announcement"

I'm not certain if the Bible Study and Calvin's Institutes might be good for the Resource Room.

Okay. . .I've held up my end of the bargain and unstuck most of those threads. SOMEONE, however, needs to apply to mod here before I unstick the "Need Mods" thread. . .:D

Oh, and a reminder since this sticky is gone now:

An announcement

A ruling has been made that all posts in CF ( including this forum) are subject to the Catholic/Protestant review committee at all times .

The practical meaning of that is that the Semper mods have no meaningful authority on any posts or threads that deal with Reformation/ Catholic issues.

This may impact on how or if you choose to discuss the reformation or the comparing of Catholic/ Reformation doctrine or history .

What's up with that?! Exactly how does this work?

Ummm. . .this has been around for a while. But what it really means is what it says--HOWEVER--if nobody reports the post (and nobody from outside SR lurks here to find stuff), then there really won't be anythying for the CPR to look at.

If there are folks lurking, the truth is still the truth and you cannot make the Catholic Church of the Reformation era look good at all. Its the most corrupt period in the history of Roman Church.

It is a fact that 16th and 17th Roman Catholics, with the blessing of popes, conspired to topple kings and kingdom. Had thousands of Protestants killed. For example you could be put to death in Catholic England for your children the creed in English. Tyndale was killed for translating the Bible into English. All the Protestant leaders in France were killed off in one day (St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre).

Pope Gregory XIII was ecsatic when he heard the news. He commissioned a painting depicting the slaughter of Protestants to be hung it in the Vatican. He had a commemorative medal struck to honour the killings.

I don't see how anyone can complain about that kind of information. Truth is truth, but you do have to watch the rhetoric.

Catholics tried to assassinate the King and the English Parliament as well. Everyone then had warts but the Catholic Church's warts and blemishes were especially grotesque.

Coram Deo,
Kenith

Oh yeah, and the WeStminster Confession isin't very kindly either
True, I loaned a copy of the confession to a friend. This person took it to a Catholic who was greatly offended by its "harsh" tone. I was questioned about this and simply told them to compare it to the canons of the Council of Trent.

Compared to Trent, the Westminster Confession is "almost" warm and fuzzy.

In Christ,

Warm and fuzzy all over, and everybody played real nice w the anabaptist too.

Those were the days, "Servetus, oh Servetus, wherefore art thou?" Mine heart burns for thee.

It just seems to me there is usu a fairly clear distinction between a personal attack and an honest discussion of facts.

I personally have had several posts taken down, but never because I meant to insult anyone, and none had anything to do with theology. I just have a very strange sense of humor. I enjoy saying the most inane thing with a straight prose, and proceeding to make an absolute idiot of myself in defense of it. For example, I decided to post on a thread of Wisconsonites engaged in light conversation that there was no state of Wisconsin in the US or elsewhere. That they were all either lying or sadly confused when talking about their home state, pursuing the matter in an agressive manner. I was appropiately warned for that.

I have at times posted on the RC subforum, and by behaving respectfully, not offended anyone. However, it is often quite difficult. IMO most RC's have very thin skins and some seem to look for any opportunity to take offense. But of course some among us do also.

Oh well, we certainly do not own this site, and if we are here, we ought to abide by the rules and decisions of others. Of course, that means many decent people who are not trying to insult wander away. But then again, some of the more offensive idiots, interested more in flaming than discussion are sent packing as well.

All in all I like this place

And I thank the mod for considering the elimination of some of the stickys (not so concerned about which ones, just some)

JR
