How many of you Presbyterians would like to have your own denominatin icon? Although I consider myself a Calvinist in that I acknowledge the validity of John Calvin's teachings concerning the doctrines of grace, are we really Calvinists, or are we Presbyterians. Predominately, Baptists teach free-will, yet their icon does not say Arminians, so why do we Calvinist/Presbyterians go by Calvinist. I realise that not all of the people in the Reformed Forum are Presbyterians, but for those of us who are, I think we should have the appropriate icon. I have suggested that in the appropriate forum and if you agree, then perhaps you might go and voice your support.

Here is what one person suggested in the suggestions thread.

Please note...the following is not meant to be speaking in an official capacity on behalf of Erwin. I will let Erwin speak for himself later.

Your best bet at getting a new denominational icon is to: a) demonstrate the need and usage, b) create an icon as a possibility. You would probably want to work this icon out with your fellow Presbyterians first, and then submit a final choice for consideration.

However, you may wish to see if Erwin will consider this before creating the icon(s). (I don't believe Erwin probably has time to go looking for an icon, however! :) )

Grace and Peace,

WJ

A Scottish celtic cross is a traditional cross used by Presbyterians, similar to this one. The old PCUS (before unification with the UPCUSA) used a blue and white one like this on their road signs.

I prefer it to the current PCUSA cross:

I personally think it's best to leave the Calvinist icon as it is,do you really want to divide,or appear to divide even more?

Think of Brother Arminian and his uncle Pelagius, they are going to have a field day.......

Anyways Calvinism is bigger than a sect/denomination,whatever.

next we will be seeing is a request for different sorts of Presbyterian :p

I don't guess it's too important, but I think Wilfred has a compelling point, though I know where you're coming from also, cygnus. Regardless of whether they come up with a new Presbyterian icon or the more general 'Calvinist' one, I'd prefer that it didn't incorporate any kind of cross, but I realize I'm probably in a minority of one on that, and don't know what I'd suggest in lieu of it.

Erwin has a rule that all faith icons must incorporate a cross.

LOL! I think that a nice sig line would be a good identifier. Some John Knox Quotes (please not Monstrous Regiment of Women!) ;) would be lovely.

I am against using any emblem which is official for either the PCA, PCUSA or OPC or any other Presbyterian denomination out there. On my church's order of worship, they have a much more intricate celtic cross that is so different from the Anglican cross that I doubt they'd have a problem with it.

I didn’t know that, but interesting. Not to be controversial, but one might argue that it’s a bit heavy-handed for him to tell all Christian denominations to which he doesn’t belong what they must or mustn’t have in their ‘icons’, even if he is the owner.

Why not Monstrous Regiment? It’s a masterpiece! I wish more people would read it.

Doesn't anyone see the irony in Calvinists wanting icons.

What would the reformers think?

Yes, but in this case ‘icon’ is not really denotative of what the Reformers were against, except in the sense of the cross, which I think most of the Puritans & Presbyterians would not be in favor of, hence my objection to the cross, though I might be mistaken on that point.

No you are not mistaken,it was a reaction against the RC use of the cross.

Now I think of it Christmas and Easter Hols were too.
