Of course I want to gain understanding. But it is not like that is going to happen overnight.

I am an example of strong views who doesn't want them, an uncommon phenomenon. I hate believing what I believe, I hate being faced with the possibility that death is the end of existence.

But for whatever reason, no matter what, that is what I feel to be a legitimate possibility, and it is the source of consistent, looming despair. I have no desire to feel this way, I just do.

Can you even imagine that kind of feeling? To have oblivion be your unhappy reality? Can you even imagine what it feels like to view death as destruction of all that you are?

I'll give them the benefit of a doubt; but I do find it odd that someone can voluntarily turn his/her back on all that.

Paul was certainly correct, when he said that those who call themselves "wise"* run the risk of becoming atheists.

Except that it says that nowhere. The bible doesn't say that Pharaoh's heart was hardened by jealousy of God's power, it says "God hardened Pharaoh's heart". In Ex 14:4 God says "And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them". He is stating explicitly that He intends to harden Pharaoh's heart so that he will chase the Isrealites. What scriptural support do you have for your interpretation?

I notice you offered no rebuttal to this:

Hell has a purpose, but its purpose is not to protect the saved from the damned as you pretend; it's punishment by eternal torture, pure and simple. If God really just wanted to allow the saved to live in peace without interference then He could simply let the unsaved cease to exists after they die. Problem solved without the need for eternal torture.

So cling to your "loving" God if you wish, but don't pretend Hell is some sort of unavoidable necessity. If you think the unbelievers deserve eternal torture then that's your prerogative, but don't try to absolve your god by pretending it serves any purpose beyond punishment.

Are you conceding the fact that Hell is not at all a necessity to protect the saved from the unsaved? If you wish to persist in this fantasy to rationalize such a hateful act by such a "loving" god, you should be able to explain why the unsaved had to be imprisoned and tortured for eternity rather than just having them cease to exist upon death. The answer is of course that it is about punishment from a jealous God, not protecting that god's followers.

Did he ever say he was saved? Going to church makes someone no more a Christian than me being a car, if I slept in my garage... There are pastors who first get saved after serving years in the ministry.

There have been religious ministers who later became born again. Prior to that, they had been playing the part while serving religion. They were trained to say the right words that religious people want to hear. Just like rabbis are religious and not born again. Seen my share of them as well. And,even a few who became born again.
