Poverty and starvation while we are throwing billions of bushels of corn into the ocean to keep the price up. Or while fancy restaurants are throwing away enough to feed thousands, every night, into dumpsters, and refusing to donate it to the poor.
Old people freezing to death in their own homes because government owned utility companies cut off their utilities in the dead of winter due to "failiure to pay" the astronomical bills.
Children being forced into the financial equivalent of slave-labor class because they cannot afford a college education, in a world that wants a Master's Degree to be a secretary.
People being forced to work harder and longer, and until they are much older than their parents were when they could retire, so companies can squeeze a bigger profit out of them. Making family time the "optional" time in the lives of many people.
The government getting more and more and more invasive into private lives. In my city, they tell you what you can park in your drive way. (No cars that are not fully registered, in running condition, and currently inspected; no boats, or recreation vehicles of any kind.) They tell you how many animals you can have, totally. They tell you when to paint your house, when to trim your trees, and when you have to mow your alley. They tell you that no more than 2 unrelated people can share a house. They tell you how many garage sales you are allowed a year. They tell you when to water, and how much to water. I know another city that tells you what kind of trees you are allowed to plant. They've chased college students out of neighborhoods here for parking on the street in neighborhoods that don't have laws against it. (Yes, they are being sued over it too.) They refused to zone to allow a care-giver and four mentally ill people to create a group home in an area. They also refused to zone to allow a care giver and five elderly people to create a group home in an area. All of the refusals claimed they were concerned over property values. My own property value doubled, in one year, after having remained the same for 15 years.
Credit card companies owning the country and no one doing ANYTHING to make them behave in an ethical manner. One nationally known company sent out "pre approved" credit cards to college students just about the time the first tuition and books are due. The cards were touted as zero interest for 6 months, with low credit limits. The student, upon activation, discovered the activation fee was higher than the credit limit, and were instantly hit with $60 "over the limit" fees. When protesting, they were told "buyer beware." When the term sheets that came with the card were presented to two law professors and two economic professors, all four professors said that only the person who wrote the terms would have understood them. Nothing was done about the unethical behavior of the credit card companies.
