• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Has to be with, since the definition of life is that which is able to reproduce.
That doesnt mean you need special organs for it.

Maybe it reproduces by building more copies of itself, just like we built the first one...?

Lol, a good point, but we have yet to build the first one :)

And even if we ever do manage to create a microbe, it's a long way from that to something capable of creating itself in the lab. How will it reproduce until then?

Well, this thread is called "a hypothetical". So I'm not ashamed to get a little sci-fi.

Who knows what a couple hundred more years will bring? We are currently only at the very beginning of synthetic biology.

I have no doubts whatsoever it will bring amazing discoveries, including longevity, the curing of disease, etc.

But I don't see life from non-life ever being accomplished, now or in the future, without the tremendous expenditure of energy. Even evolutions best bet is a past atmosphere filled with tremendous gigantic bolts of lightening. Being an EU supporter, this is the only chance IMO of it ever occurring. Religious ideals set aside for the moment, without electricity there is no chance at all of it ever occurring, being all life uses naturally generated electric currents for movement, and if capable for thought.

Needless to say that the only experiment coming close involved electricity and after 7 days , amino acids came pouring forth.

Viruses cannot reproduce themselves; they need a host cell to do that for them!
