  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Since Keil's cooking I suggest we go to his place and party!
You'd be welcome. It's fairly sedate at the moment, though - watching Samurai Jack, reading a scifi novel, and posting. We'd have to get out a board game or just enjoy talking.

(42 minutes left on the bread and the crusty bread smell is just starting)
(watch out, Jack, floating sexy girl is going to try and take you out!)

Garlic is a good thing (in moderation of course). I really enjoy it as a seasoning.... but you need to graduate from parmesan to the king of italian cheeses, romano. (I'm not even going anywhere near gorgonzola, the slimy shoe cheese) - but the wafting of garlic and romano.... mmmmm.

Congats on your 400th post!
I use romano in my spaghetti sauce and always grate some up with my mozzarella when I make pepperoni rolls. I love gorgonzola cheese on fresh pears.

Cool. Who is your favorite sci fi author. Mine are Terry Goodkind and Anne McCaffery. I like mononpoly. Dibs on the race car.

I have a few favorites - at the moment I'm reading David Weber. I like Goodkind for his Wizard's rules and some of the true things the echo and McCaffrey for her dragon worlds. I do wish that the morality of their cultures were a little cleaner, though.

Favorite authors? Well, EE Doc Smith, LE Modesitt Jr., Robert Jordan, of course Weber, and a few others. At the moment I'm a bit miffed at Jordan for dragging his heels on finishing up his series....

Yeah. By the time the next Wheel of Time book comes out you have to go back and skim the last one just to get caught up. I read Skylark of Space some time ago and it was pretty good. I think my favorite sci-fi of all time would have to be Stranger in a Strange Land.

Jordan is currently in the business of expanding and expanding when he should be wrapping. If you enjoyed Skylark, then you should read the Lensman series. It starts slowly, but it is the most classic EE Doc Smith there is.

I've read Stranger, but I much prefer Starship Troopers and some of Heinlein's other works, particularly things like Tunnel in the Sky (the family workings in Stranger are not what I'd look for). However, if you liked Stranger, you should also consider reading Gordon R. Dickson's TimeStorm which is along some similar lines with regard to odd time travel. Dickson is another excellent writer. His Child Cycle is classic.

If you like political or philosophical scifi, then you might also enjoy Modesitt's book, Adiamante.

My last sci fi read was Naked Empire. I agree with you about Robert Jordan. He really should be wrapping it up, It has gotten to far away from the orginal starting point and there are too many characters to keep up with. I'm thinking of getting House Corrino for my next read. The Dune series was what started me out on science fiction.
