  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Well, I found out why my desktop can't accept the upgrade to 8.1. Certain AMD CPUs do not support one of its features.

You're not missing much....

Actually,I started this thread as a discussion about the pros and cons about the Windows O/S..not wheather open source O/S's are better or not.
In my case, the cons outweigh the pros..by a mile.
Please try to stay within the parameters of the OP..thanks in advance.

As you are the creator of this thread then sure. :)

I have 4 machines here with Win8, upgraded one to 8.1 and personally thought it was a waste of time. Another Win8 machine keeps crashing on a regular basis whilst it was great with Win7, the hardware is fine so its the OS. Two other laptops seem to be running 8 ok but they ran better with 7 IMHO.

I think your experience in general is replicated around the world...

I haven't.

I read enough about the nighmare of 8.0 to remain happy with 7. I always check the reviews on such updates so as to find out others experience before being one that can account of my own.

Has anyone updated to 8.1 yet?
I did and have been having to continually tweak my system ever since.
To me, it just isn't worth the time.
All of your files come with you, but the desktop gets screwed.
My internet settings had to be completely reset because of "connectivity"problems..I'm connected, but at times the navigation shows that I'm not.
If you have classic shell, don't expect it to work for a while
Once again,it just isn't worth the hassle.

Actually,I think that XP was the best all around Windows platform.Longhorn(7) was ok..8 was a waste of Redmond's talents!8.1 just exasperated the fact.

Unfortunate, those who buy a preloaded system don't have the opportunity to pick which OS to choose from..luckily,I have the disks going back to XP..when I get through paying this monstrosity off,I'm reverting back to that.

And this is the sad part, you have been made to pay for something that you had no option to choose or possibly want to begin with. Going back to a previous incarnation of the OS may not work either due to lack of driver support for your hardware.

This is the main reason why I won't be forced into that stupid hardware/software update lifecycle. Here in NZ I hear that about 30% of businesses are still using XP - why?, it works well for them and/or they cant afford to upgrade.

They are still using XP (and possibly NT, 2000, and/or 98) because the NSA has backdoor source code access to the entire OS of Windows later than Windows 95. Windows 98, NT, and early XP underwent "negotiations" in which Microsoft "claimed" to remove debugging symbols containing the objects "KEY" and "NSAKEY." XP was a hacker's paradise because of this source code backdoor - it wasn't because XP was buggy like the story went back in the day, it was because hackers for the NSA and civilians were having fun. But XP is the most compatible with software/least filled with marginal security risks that most companies just use XP and buy encryption. Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 are jokes; a novice hacker can get in those backdoors.

I really don't worry about the cams, mics and whatnot..I have old periferials and the software to go on withit..and windows does have compatability modes to handle it too.

The trouble with going back to XP, even if all the newer hardware driver issues were fine, is that you will be reverting to an OS with security patches and critical software updates that are no longer available (from next April) and you will be basically inviting trouble and malicious people out on the internet to play with your PC and you too. You may have anti-virus which will help defend an XP machine but for how long? AV vendors will drop support for XP pretty quick I think.

Recently saw this article in which the author states,

About a week ago, I installed the Windows 8.1 update on my Samsung Series 9 Ultrabook. The results have been disastrous: screen-resolution problems, error-prone VPN clients, iTunes crashes, sleep-mode oddities, and BSODs. Issues before 8.1: zero.
Needless to say, I'm more exasperated with Windows than I've ever been in 20 years of using it.

I guess this is the result of inexperienced programmers trying to reinvent the wheel with rapid development tools - it was a recipe waiting to happen! I saw this happening when I was involved in Vista testing, that was the point when I turned my back on the whole mess.

There really isn't anything on my puter that is of any worth,I have no critical info stored on it,no phone numbers,SSNs,addresses, financial data-NADA..
I am planning on getting a second hand machine and going Ubuntu with that in case I do need to start having info like that stored on the main drive..
Right now,my info is on my external drive which I keep unplugged until needed, which isn't often..after which,it gets unplugged again.,and the history of my visit to that drive on my main drive is wiped.

Cool, just a note to people out there that any compromised machine (such as an XP machine after April 2014) could be used as a launchpad to attack other devices on a network even though it might have no other use than for just web browsing

You can encrypt your home directory in Ubuntu during install. That should keep your data safe.

After adjusting to V 8 I found 8.1 to be quicker and operated pretty smoothly. Until I upgraded to Office 365 and neither I nor Microsoft Tech Support can get its indexing function to work. Older programmes can be a problem with V8 and 64 bit technology.

Windows 7 was trouble free and very reliable.
