Well, I found out why my desktop can't accept the upgrade to 8.1. Certain AMD CPUs do not support one of its features.
In my case, the cons outweigh the pros..by a mile.
Please try to stay within the parameters of the OP..thanks in advance.
Has anyone updated to 8.1 yet?
I did and have been having to continually tweak my system ever since.
To me, it just isn't worth the time.
All of your files come with you, but the desktop gets screwed.
My internet settings had to be completely reset because of "connectivity"problems..I'm connected, but at times the navigation shows that I'm not.
If you have classic shell, don't expect it to work for a while
Once again,it just isn't worth the hassle.
As you are the creator of this thread then sure.
I have 4 machines here with Win8, upgraded one to 8.1 and personally thought it was a waste of time. Another Win8 machine keeps crashing on a regular basis whilst it was great with Win7, the hardware is fine so its the OS. Two other laptops seem to be running 8 ok but they ran better with 7 IMHO.
I think your experience in general is replicated around the world...
I haven't.
I read enough about the nighmare of 8.0 to remain happy with 7. I always check the reviews on such updates so as to find out others experience before being one that can account of my own.
Unfortunate, those who buy a preloaded system don't have the opportunity to pick which OS to choose from..luckily,I have the disks going back to XP..when I get through paying this monstrosity off,I'm reverting back to that.
Here in NZ I hear that about 30% of businesses are still using XP - why?, it works well for them and/or they cant afford to upgrade.
I really don't worry about the cams, mics and whatnot..I have old periferials and the software to go on withit..and windows does have compatability modes to handle it too.
About a week ago, I installed the Windows 8.1 update on my Samsung Series 9 Ultrabook. The results have been disastrous: screen-resolution problems, error-prone VPN clients, iTunes crashes, sleep-mode oddities, and BSODs. Issues before 8.1: zero.
Needless to say, I'm more exasperated with Windows than I've ever been in 20 years of using it.
The trouble with going back to XP, even if all the newer hardware driver issues were fine, is that you will be reverting to an OS with security patches and critical software updates that are no longer available (from next April) and you will be basically inviting trouble and malicious people out on the internet to play with your PC and you too. You may have anti-virus which will help defend an XP machine but for how long? AV vendors will drop support for XP pretty quick I think.
Recently saw this article in which the author states,
I guess this is the result of inexperienced programmers trying to reinvent the wheel with rapid development tools - it was a recipe waiting to happen! I saw this happening when I was involved in Vista testing, that was the point when I turned my back on the whole mess.
There really isn't anything on my puter that is of any worth,I have no critical info stored on it,no phone numbers,SSNs,addresses, financial data-NADA..
I am planning on getting a second hand machine and going Ubuntu with that in case I do need to start having info like that stored on the main drive..
