  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

ha ha, then you are missing out.

Better than some boring Christian movie heh heh. This movie has it all.
Besides, its history, and its good to learn from other sections in history instead of a few.

I've been very excited to see this since the trailers came out as well. We have an IMAX nearby but of course those tickets sold out a week in advance, stupid me. But we did get to see it in DLP. Anyways, cinematography wise the movie was beautiful. It will set the bar much higher from now on. It's pretty gory but I think you all knew and expected that. However, my husband and I are in our mid twenties and were ok with the violence. I saw families with young children in our viewing. This is not in any way a movie for young kids to see.

One more thing I want to mention to anyone who hasn't seen it yet - unbeknown to me the film has several scenes of partial female nudity and even one of men. My husband covered his eyes, but still. Those scenes were completely unnecessary and detracted from the movie IMO. Had I known about them beforehand I wouldn't have gone. Wish that Clean Flicks company was still operating. Anyways, just wanted to warn everyone. Besides that it was a very good movie.

So you'll willingly go to a movie with killings, gore, beheadings, murder, war, etc., but nudity is unacceptable? :p

lol true, graphic violence is ok, as long as it does not swear nor have sexual content, ha ha, I did not cover my eyes because I was watching nature at work. Even though one time it was rape, still, the other parts is just a couple making love.

Given that the events of this film take place roughly 480 years before the birth of Christ and, in a location where the Jewish concepts of a single god have no foothold whatsoever, I really doubt that it could be anything other Paganistic.

Besides, its history, and its good to learn from other sections in history instead of a few.

Problem is that is historical "accuracy" is questionable at best :/

Its was written by greek "historians" and since there were apperently no greek survivors what happend after the main group broke away is anyones guess. The number of Persian soldiers is also unknown but most believe it to "only" be about 60.000-250.000(unlike the 1.000.000 mentioned sometimes) including all the non-combat personell against a good 7k greeks at first in a *VERY* narrow canyon which makes it very very very unlikely that the full forces ever clashed and it was mostly afew hundred at the time. No accounts of "Greek" attacks either. They simply stood at one point and taking on small amounts of persians.

To make things worse most of the "info" about this battle surfaced in a time when cultural nationalism ruled which is why it depicts a battle betwen the "Democratic and civilized"(something that *REALLY* cant be said for the Spartans) Greeks ,i.e Europeans or "whites, vs the "uncivilized" Persians(muslims, africans etc.) and as such likely got even more twisted at that point.

All of this is ofcourse minor things to get stuck on and if you're not much for historical accuracy then I guess it's a good movie. Cant stand over glorification myselfs so doubt I'll go watch. Maybe see it when it comes on TV.

As far as the nudity goes it was quite common in Greece and the Spartans were known for going into battle naked to show their courage(not hiding behind armor). Homosexuality was also very wide spread. In some areas the love betwen two men was concidered the only "true love" and man/woman relationships were soly for reproduction.

From what I understand about this historical accuracy of this is nothing more than what we know about Helen, Troy, Greece and the rest according to the great Greek writers, historians, and thinkers.

I do know from my own study and drive by research is that the 300 were actually 1000. 700 Thespians joined the Spartans in taking a stand. This is one of the first democracies.

Pagan, yes since this is at a time in the world when His word had not been spread yet. It is what is expected due to history and the technology or lack there of that was at hand in what 450 BC.

As for the nudity when going into battle, as someone said it was a bravery issue. It was also something that many of the "Greek" nations did at them time. I believe I read somewhere that even the Celtic tribes of Briton did the samething. Nothing abnormal or even dirty about it. The human body in itslef is not a sexual device until WE make it such.

I will have to disagree a bit with one poster about the homosexuality aspect. From what I have studied it was not so much as the "true love" but a bond that they encouraged to be forged since they fought in pairs. They believed that the bond would be even more of a plus in battle. They believed that you would protect someone that much more when there was an intimate sexual bond.

I have done some research into the real history of the battle. Unlike Troy and the the Trojan war, there is historical significance and records of Thermoplye. About 100,000 did face off again Leonidas and his 300 bodyguards, with 700 Thespians. They did kill many many many MANY more Persians than one would think possible, and there is historical proof that there was a large volley of arrows fired into that spot. Not ruining the movie for anyone, you will see what I am talking about.

I would not want to fight 1 spartan, let alone 300 of them, not even mentioning the 30,000 at the end... I would be too scared

They should have showed the battle at the end! It would have been EPIC, maybe there is a small chance they will put it in the DVD?

yes 302.

i thought that there was too much "adult material". kinda took away from the film. as for violence, i can appreciate, because thats what violence is. its not all blood packets and rubber guts. at least it wasnt like the OLD john wayne ww 2 movies where they just fall down.anyone who doesnt appreciate the blood doesnt appreciate history. IMO.

As for adult material, that was in the graphic novel this was based on and they were VERY true to the source material. Like Sin City, they used the graphic novel as story boards for the film, which is why it is so amazing because Frank Miller is an amazing writer.

As far as adult material in it goes, I do not really think it was over the top. In all the scenes where it was used it was used to further the story. Think about all the scenes where it was. Mountain top to show how disgusting the oracles were, scene with his wife to show their connection and love (lines to go along with it), and the Xerxes throne room to show what he was like and what he was offering the guy. It was used for a point

Not here to start a debate, but seriously. You go to a movie with graphic violence, with body parts getting hacked off in slow motion, and you complain about some scenes of nudity?

Seriously, give that some serious thought, and think about it.
