GREAT CYGNUS!!!! I AM SO THRILLED!!!
I'll have to go look up some of my English and Welsh Ancestry...I have all the family records going back to the mid 1500's...I have some great Coat of Arms with a double crown involved...I have always loved birds, crows and ravens too...diving ducks...

I LOVE your pictures and stories!!! Especially about castles and music and rennaissance! Have you ever gone to these places yourself? They must have been less than a few hours away or so? I would love to travel to just visit some of these Welsh Medieval castles!...( I also love dearly the castles of the south of France, authentic French Renissance Music, and discovering the origins of the true 12th century Albigenses persecution and what silk banners they had in their time!) If there were ever hope to resolve some of the ghostly issues of the castles(!) Whew...to spend the night over night at a castle---and sense for ghosts!...You know, like a kind of priestly prayer circle or something?

I also noticed this North Eastern Welsh castle, Ewloe Castle:

Somethings about my own life are so filled with change and living life moment by the moment, where I would rather be projecting life strategies five years in advance( I trust in the Lord for all measures of time I have to live by), I sense some things from the deep long ago past ( as in my sleep and in my old old dreams) are very unmoving and long standing and unchanging---as in traditions and old ways of life...I would have wanted a little more traditonal values in my life, but working with resolve and resolute actions in life, at times traditional values have to be looked at as functional or what is working the best at the moment...just listening and not opinionating is somethings OK, but I rather confront issues to solve problems......

Music is sometimes all we have for resolve....aaahahahahaha!!!LOLXOXLOL!!!

Do you travel in your trucking with laptops, Cygnus????!!!

Hi freespirit , I have visted all three Castles in those pics , and when I was on honeymoon did we go to a nice hot beach somwhere ?
No , we went to a few old buildings (abbeys) in North Wales :D ........ you have to remember I haven't lived in North Wales since I was maybe 5 years old , but I have family ties there , and I went on Holiday with my parents to Nrth Wales almost every year (my Nanna and Grandpa used to live there and my Uncle and now my Mother still does)
So I have quite an affinity with the place , but I do love England and Scotland , (I haven't been to Ireland yet) the countryside and British wildlife is so wonderful .....

THESE LITTLE CREATURES ARE SO CUTE!!!
The artist is great! I love the little shrew mole and the cute little bird looks like one of our KingFishers!

I don't have a book on UK birds...maybe I should look them up sometime, as I've been an eastern american birdwatcher all my life!
I've done quite a few studies of birds and birdsongs here! I also studied some song birds of the world...nightingales are great songbirds of the world (hence the Music Wren from Brazil in my signature). The Cornell Bird Song album mentioned the bird called the Bluethroat as a great european songster...
(Some of the French Renaissance music I remember also has a song about a specific lark and a nightingale..) Its a good study...interesting about some of the eye markings of some of the songsters of certain areas of the world...

Brixworth in Northamptonshire is one of England's oldest churches, and the biggest Saxon church north of the Alps.

The Tudor era saw one important change; it was under the influence of Elizabeth I that preaching long sermons became popular. And by long, I mean loonnnnng - 2 to 4 hours was not uncommon. This meant that the victims, ... er ...church attendees, needed to sit to listen, so pews became standard in the naves. The preacher needed a lectern, and more often, a pulpit. So the pulpit was added to the nave also. Most of the pulpits you see in parish churches today date from the Tudor period, or later.
http://www.britainexpress.com/History/english-parish-churches.htm

One other early Saxon building of note is the church at Brixworth, Northamptonshire (c.676). Interestingly, it was built re-using old Roman bricks. It is also unusual for its length; at nearly 100 feet long Brixworth is large compared to other early Saxon churches.

Surprisingly few large churches remain from the later period of Saxon building (900-1050). The larger buildings, particularly the monasteries, were generally rebuilt in the Norman period, and little Saxon work remains above ground. The smaller churches are extremely simple in layout; basically a simple nave divided from a rectangular chancel by a narrow arch. Examples include St. Lawrence, Bradford-on-Avon, and Boarhunt, Hampshire.

Speaking of Birds , there are Three birds that always move me ,
The Swan (a protected bird of the Crown in the UK)
The Robin , I saw two 2 days ago , I think I know what there game was ... :D
and
The Woodpecker..... there colours are amazing.
Two birds I have seen while driving my truck that made my heart skip a beat ....... a Falcon , it just sat on a post next to the motorWay , it looked supreme (these are birds of Prey as you will know)
and,
an Owl , yes an Owl , it was late one night , maybe even morning , perhaps 1:00 AM , no vehicles anywhere and I looked up through the fog where the street lamps were , an Owl , a Barn Owl took to flight , and I seem to remember it was a full ,moon , because it was surreal as I manouvered my truck it went in my direction for 10-20 seconds or so , and I could clearly see it , kinda like those amazing wildlife programs in slow motion .....

I have seen this building in Market Harborough Leicestershire scores of times , (one of the benefits of delivering beer to hundreds and hundreds of pubs is the advantage of seeing hundreds of villages in the East Midlands etc) I always liked the idea of scripture on a building ....

Hi, Cygnus :)

I love owls, though I've never seen one in real life. I love their call, too. I guess I have an affinity with them as I'm a night person..........:D

Often when I take my son to work (he works in the next town) we see a hawk lazily gliding and circling above. Beautiful to watch! My son and I love watching birds flying, especially big birds.

One time we watched a documentary on Sky TV about a bird (I think it was a falcon, or maybe an eagle) which was taken really, really high up into the sky and then released. It played around for a minute or two and then plummeted straight down to the ground in a dive as straight as an arrow, while they timed it. We were holding our breath as impact with the ground looked certain, but no..........a split second before impact it pulled out of the dive and swept up again, to slow down, do a few rolls :D and then return to its trainer. Absolutely amazing to watch!! Phenomenal speed and breathtaking skills!!

That's really choice, Cygnus!! These birds are beautiful. Well, actually, I think all birds are beautiful. I'm very fond of birds. We saw another documentary, my son and I, about vultures. When I tuned into the programme, I saw these massive birds in flight - so graceful despite their size, and I have to admit I didn't realise they were vultures until later in the programme. Changed my view of them, it did!

When I was at primary school we were divided up into four houses too..........Red, Green, Gold and Blue. Every year we had an Athletics Competition and I was in Red House, which hadn't won for years. Anyway, this particular year, there was a 'Speedy Gonzales' who took out all the running races as well as long jump, ensuring a victory for Red House. She was chosen to go up and receive the shield for Red House, which was a shock, as she was a shy girl.

Oh, to be as fleet of foot still!! :D

So have you ever gone bird-watching, Cygnus? You know, the full quid..........hiding under a prickly bush getting cramped and thirsty, waiting for hours to get that one sublime shot of a newborn taking its first wobbly flight? :D

Reminds me of the words Jesus spoke about not storing up treasures on earth, which won't last, but to store up treasures in heaven, which will remain.

Matthew 6:21: For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Cygnus, that photo of the old church up there is wonderful. We have nothing ancient like that here in NZ - we're still very young in comparison to Great Britain.

Have you ever wandered through abbey ruins? If you have, was there a tangible atmosphere of serenity there? Centuries-old buildings and ruins are fascinating as you imagine all those who have peopled those buildings down through the years.

Remember I mentioned my fave series of books for girls, which features folk and morris dancing in each of them? Well, those books are set in Oxfordshire and the main characters live next to a ruined abbey. These pics show parts of the abbey on which the author based her setting.

hi JS

'Recognising Saxon churches

The remaining Saxon churches usually have a west or central tower (or no tower at all), and have two or three internal spaces. Transepts are not common. Generally the buildings are small, and are tall and long relative to their width. They have thick walls, often made of squared stones. "Long-and-short" work can be used on wall corners, and wall surfaces may have decorative lesenes. Doors and windows are small and narrow with straight lintels, arches, or (in later buildings) triangular heads. Paired windows can be separated by squat pillars with banding and crude capitals, and often have an arch cut from a single piece of stone. Windows are deeply splayed. Columns can be plain or with spiral, banded or other basic decoration. Most remaining Saxon churches in England have been extended in later periods, as at Kirk Hammerton, W R Yorks. Here the original nave is now the south aisle, and the chancel is a chapel.'

That's lovely, Cygnus. :) You'll treasure those photos. I don't have the knowledge to recognise different types of ancient buildings, but I appreciate them very much.

Do you ever look at things which are very old, like trees or buildings, and feel 'fleeting' compared to their ages? I do..........:)

Cygnus, I have to laugh....ahahahaahahah!!! I AM So amazed!!!
This is great and amazing for me to hear how kids in class are actually named after falcons---the fastest birds on earth...

We have some Peregrine Falcons that are being nurtured in our estern cities but are rare here in the country...They are the fastest falcons in the world---their dives are clocked at 200 MPH:

I love this picture of the bird:

Both you and joyshirley have so much great information here...I would like to keep up with some of this...(!!!)
