One third what?

Will survive -- or die?

Revelation 8:11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.
"One-third will survive. This concept is also addressed when Jesus said, 'Enter by the narrow gate,' where 'many' and 'few' are mentioned. In the original language, 'many' can mean 2/3 and 'few' can mean 1/3, or even more than half or less than half. However, some people interpret 'few' to mean 10%. I believe that 10% represents God's faithful, but 1/3 will be saved. Serving God comes with a high price, as He watches over every word we say to hold us accountable."

Zechariah 13:8-9: "And in all the land," declares the LORD, "two-thirds will be cut off and perish, but a third will be left in it. This third I will bring through the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on My name, and I will answer them. I will say, 'They are My people,' and they will say, 'The LORD is our God.'”

This scripture originally referred to Israel and has historical significance. The question is: How do you apply the Old Testament to the Church today?

Jesus said in Matthew 7:13-14 (NIV): "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."

Regardless, it's not going to be the end of the world.

At least, not like Y2K was supposed to be.

This is misleading and misrepresenting every time you bring it up. It's dishonest and irritating.

A couple of half remembered articles by ignorant journalists do not represent the reality of the situation in the late 90s.

There was extensive publication by actual experts and they were not claiming it was going to be the end of the world.

However it was an actual significant problem that took millions and millions of dollars and the effort of many thousands of professionals in IT to make sure we didn't have significant problems in our banking and communications systems.

IF it's this:

Revelation 8:11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

As far as causing the end of the world, as the title of this OP suggests:

0%
I admit that was an attention grabbing headline, but I did add link in the OP to a factual article about it.

They haven't called it "Wormwood".

Revelation 8:11 could also be poetic prophecy of a more metaphorical and historical nature rather than a literal 'star' falling out of the heavens.
Can an asteroid poison water anyway?

What could happen if it hits, and should we worry?

An asteroid measuring as wide as 295 feet is possibly headed right toward Earth, but don’t run for cover just yet.

During the 1908 Tunguska event in Siberia, the impact of a 213-foot meteor lofted debris, creating bright nights for several days over Europe and Asia, from Siberia to the Atlantic Ocean, according to the USGS.

Another notable event involved the 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor, which was 66 feet in diameter. Chelyabinsk caused minimal damage to the area where it crash-landed, but its entry created an air burst.

In the unlikely event that the asteroid’s trajectory is toward Earth, its destination would be somewhere along a “risk corridor” that extends across the eastern Pacific Ocean, northern South America, the Atlantic Ocean, the Arabian Sea and South Asia.

This is the supposed impact corridor:

Unless the asteroid hits in india, the impact on civilisation won't be that great.
I'm more concerned about the elephants in Africa.

What am I bid on this 50 m asteroid? Is there a 2% out there?
Asteroids could be worth trillions of dollars. When my son was in college they worked on a robotic core sample. He went to Washington to show them how their money was being spent. Two or three companies are doing that right now. He was working for NASA.

Asteroid Mining Corporation (AMC): They are developing robots called Space Capable Asteroid Robotic Explorers (SCAR-E) designed to drill into asteroids and process materials on-site.

One third will survive although the scripture is talking about Isreal.

Zechariah 13:9 - Bible Gateway

I will put this third through the fire; I will refine them as silver is refined and test them as gold is tested. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people,’ and they will say, ‘The Lord is our God.’”

Apparently it could cause blast damage within a radius of 50 kilometres.

"If the asteroid turns out to be on the large end of its estimated size range, the impact could produce blast damage as far as 50 kilometres from the impact site," Chodas said.

"But that's in the unlikely event that it might impact at all.

I suppose if it landed in the ocean it might cause a tidal wave.

Not really. Even a 250 meter diameter meteroid (5 times the diameter) barely causes a tidal wave in a 75 kilometer radius. The growth rate also seems exponential (I'm too lazy to plot the table), so a 50 meter astroid really only would cause a noticeable wave if coming down right next to the shoreline.

Sorry, make that 3.1%

Not that we've been doing this long, but I believe that's the highest ever such probability (for a significant object).

Torino scale 3: A close encounter, meriting attention by astronomers. Current calculations give a 1% or greater chance of collision capable of localized destruction. Most likely, new telescopic observations will lead to reassignment to Level 0. Attention by public and by public officials is merited if the encounter is less than 10 years away.

Ah well, down to 0.28%
You do realise this ruse is designed for the construction of 3 space arks to evacuate earth and save humanity.
  • Ark A: Designated for leaders, scientists, and other high achievers.
  • Ark B: Allocated for middlemen, professions and individuals deemed non-essential, such as telephone sanitizers, hairdressers, marketing executives, fundamentalists and science haters.
  • Ark C: Intended for workers and those who made or did things.
The joke however is on the occupants on Ark B, the plan is to get rid of them while those on A and C will remain on earth.
