  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Treatment of the Diptych(s)

[By this, of course, I mean the diptychs in a liturgical setting, not the common art term for icons and paintings set in a diptych (two-fold) arrangement.] The diptych was once a literal object kept in the local church, made of wax tablets onto which the names of the living and departed...

Decoding MYSTERY - with Jesus' words

Hi there, So I had a brilliant flash of understanding, relating to MYSTERY (in internet terms: the "shouting" of MYSTERY!). It says in Revelation 18:7 "I sit as queen, and am not alone and shall not see sorrow" - which is a direct correlation with John 10:10 "the thief does not come forth, but...

Are there any Maronites here? Re: Feast day of HH St. Cyril of Alexandria

Hi all, To any Maronites, or those who know the inner workings of the Syriac Maronite Church: Is today the commemoration of HH St. Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria in the Maronite tradition? Just curious, since I saw on Facebook via the group "Syriac Solidarity Council" (pan-Syriac organization...

Tradition(al) Pet Peeves (meant to be fun/blow off steam/no flaming, please)

So today, June 7/Pashons 13, is the commemoration of one St. Fournous, one of the seventy disciples of Christ, according to the synaxarium of the Coptic Orthodox Church. His entry there is very brief and vague. On this day also, the disciple Phorus (Fournous), one of the seventy disciples...

The Phenomenon of "Saints of Lost Things"

I was looking for something completely different when I found YouTube a tamgeed (a kind of paraliturgical hymn sung in the Coptic Orthodox Church; I think the English translation would be "Glorification", but I learned the Arabic word first, sooo...) for Anba Wanas of Luxor. I thought there were...

    Questions on Praying to Saints

Hello all! For a long time I had trouble with the idea of praying to Saints, but in recent months as I became sure God was leading me to Orthodoxy I researched it more and now I have no problem with it. When we pray to the Saints it is not idolatry, rather we enter into prayer with them to...

    Confident Assurance

Ephesians 1:15-23 ESV For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom...

    In Pleasant Places

Psalm 16:1-2 ESV Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” Oh, how true it is that I have no good apart from God. All that I have comes from him. I am who I am by the grace of God, doing what he has called me to do...

    I Appreciate You!

Bringing it to Completion Philippians 1:3-6 ESV I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you...

    St. Patrick's Day?

I used to work in restaurants that celebrated St. Patrick's Day with Irish food like Corned Beef and Cabbage and beer. I'm not a member of a church that recognizes Saints in the Catholic sense, but I do see the historical merit of Saint Patrick's life and Sainthood, which is formally designated...

    Videos on Holy Elders

I've found some videos about recent elders and saints that I would like to post from time to time on this thread. I hope you all will find them enjoyable: Here is one about Elder Iakovos of Evia: The subtitles could use some improvement, but they are better than the ones that are automatic...

No date yet for Blessed Romero canonization, archbishop says

Link: No date yet for Blessed Romero canonization, archbishop says Oscar Cardinal Romero's official Sainthood is long overdue IMO. I was glad that Pope Francis beautified him after years of tie-ups over what seemed like essentially political objections by John-Paul II and Benedict XVI. The...

    Lent Madness

    War on the Saints

Sunday, September 11, 2016, 8:18 a.m. – The Lord Jesus put in mind the song “Oh, To Be Like Thee.” Speak, Lord, your words to my heart. I read Revelation 12 (ESV). Jim & Nancy Forest: Becoming Orthodox - From USA to Netherlands, from Protestantism to Orthodoxy

Becoming Orthodox by Jim Forest I am sometimes asked how the son of atheist parents ended up not only a Christian but a member of the Orthodox Church. In fact it wasn’t so big a leap as it sounds. For starters my parents weren’t people for whom atheism was a religion unto itself. Their...
