  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

The Lutheran Hail Mary and the Orthodox Angelic Salutation

I had previously mentioned to my friend @MarkRohfrietsch and my other Lutheran friends such as @Ain't Zwinglian and @ViaCrucis and I think also my Anglican friend @Shane R that the Orthodox form of the Hail Mary tends to either be identical to the Roman Catholic one, or so similar in wording as...

    Coptic - seven ecumenical councils

A few years back, there was a Coptic poster who acknowledged or agreed with all 7 of the first ecumenical councils. Why would such a person by Coptic instead of Eastern orthodox? Is there a theological difference between the two at that point?

Answering a liturgical question from OBOB

Christ is Risen! I just noticed my dear Roman Catholic friend @JimR-OCDS asked an interesting liturgical question in OBOB, which I would like to answer in some detail, and I thought I’d post the answer here: In Byzantine Rite Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches it is a separate service...

On the Celebration of the Sabbath in Liturgical Churches

The SOP (the rules) for this forum make an important point: “Although the Law of God is pleasing to a believer it is not a necessary requirement for salvation. (Psalms 119:174; Galatians 3:10, Galatians 5:18)” Thus, whereas it is the case that the Eastern Orthodox and other denominations such...

Prayers for the Orthodox and fellow Christians in Syria

All Christians in Syria, such as our Antiochian, Syriac and Armemian brethren and our friends in the Melkite, Syriac and Latin Catholic churches are in immediate danger due to the country having been taken over by an Islamist movement which has a history of persecuting Christians. Through the...

Royal blue zostikon? (Orthodox cassock) during Vigils with Kursk Root Icon?

In this video of Vigils at the ROCOR Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Washington, DC, there is a clergyman (whose pectoral cross suggests he is a presbyter) who appears to be wearing a royal blue Zostikon (cassock). I am aware of white zostikons as used by the Romanian Orthodox Patriarch...

    Can anyone recognize this church

I of late have had two separate channels suggested to me by Youtube which depict parishes which appear to be some kind of Byzantine Rite Catholic, but I am not sure as I find Cyrillic hard to read. They are using melodies that are Russian Orthodox, but they are wearing Byzanrine rather than...

Which jurisdictions have the most members of Carpatho-Rusyn, Lemko and Ruthenian Greek Catholic descent?

In the US, while ACROD consists almost entirely of Carpatho-Rusyns, as the name implies, I would not be surprised if the OCA had more members in total, and my understanding is that a great many Rusyns are also members of the ROCOR and even the MP parishes in Western Pennsylvania. Likewise, in...

Orthodox Priest on the dangers of Legalism and Selfish Spirituality

I particularly liked the quote he thought was from St. Isaac the Syrian “God is not just, God is Love, if he were just I would be the first person condemned to Hell.

This is what Christian Worship Should Look Like

I thought about posting this thread in Traditional Theology, where I have posted collections of thrilling liturgical worship before, however, recently I have added to my collection several worship services which are not liturgical, even if they are broadly speaking liturgical, or are from...

The Fascinating World of Eastern Orthodox Old Calendarists

Old Calendarists are those Eastern Orthodox who regard the use of the Gregorian or Revised Julian Calendars to be heretical, and also regard ecumenism to be heretical, indeed, they are more opposed to ecumenism than to the Gregorian and Revised Julian Calendar, as these were implemented to bring...

Excerpt from dramatic film about Mor Severus and Mor Philoxenus

it’s interesting how what Saints Severus and Philoxenus say has, through the adoption of Theopaschitism, become prevalent among the Eastern Orthodox, which explains why the tense relations depicted here between Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox are no longer the case where it matters most...

Beautiful 1961 Documentary on Eastern Orthodox Holy Week

As today is Great and Holy Friday on the Julian Calendar, I thought it meet and right to share this 1961 American documentary covering Antiochian Orthodox Holy Week Services, led by Metropolitan Anthony Bashir (Memory eternal, reposed in 1966) the predecessor of Metropolitan Philip Saliba...

A beautiful perspective on the Priesthood

I read this quote from the much respected Greek Orthodox Metropolitan Hierotheos Vlachos, which to me underscores the concept of the priesthood and episcopate in the traditional churches: “The Priest holds a great position in the Divine Liturgy, because he asks the Father to send the Holy...

    Exorcism Question

I am a possible Convert to Orthodoxy, and my spouse left me less than 2 years ago. We were only married for less than 2 years prior to her leaving, and there are no children involved. She is from another continent, and it is a situation where I am permitted to divorce her based on 1 Cor 7 as...

Question from possible convert to Orthodoxy

I am a possible convert to Eastern Orthodox Christianity, and have noticed that although Paul indicates in 1 Corinthians 11:4 that men should not pray or prophesy with their head covered, there seem to be some (although not all) Eastern Orthodox Christian priests who have their head covered when...

    2. Apophatic Theology, Doctrinal Development And Schisms

Apophatic theology, known as the Via Negativa in Latin, and apophatic language involves the use of negations to express divine things, for example, God is unchanging, God cannot be circumscribed, there is no place where God is not, there is nothing that God does not know, and there is no limit...

Eastern Orthodox Discussion on Epistemic Certainty

I'm curious what the Orthodox Christian view of epistemology is. I've been struggling with the idea of epistemic certainty (i.e. is it possible? if so, how can we know for sure? if not, then can we really know God?) would love to hear y'alls thoughts on this! (Btw, if you are not Eastern...
