I read it as everlasting destruction of the body (death). But msmorality has pointed to other verses that indicate our spirits will be corrected over time. There is no eternal torment for sure. The concept was unknown, especially to the OT writers.

When I read Genesis, I think how very close these people came to an outline of events that actually occurred, and how it must have beem completely unknown to them how close they were comming to what actually transpired. I don't really know why it would be important to try to make it seem exact...
