What’s left of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante after Trump slashed the monuments’ boundaries? See the new maps.
Grand Staircase-Escalante will be reduced from 1.87 million acres to just over 181,500 acres, while Bears Ears will be cut from 1.36 million acres to nearly 121,100 acres.Maps released Tuesday by the White House show that Trump’s new cuts remove many iconic locations from the monuments, including The Grand Staircase in Grand Staircase-Escalante and Valley of the Gods in Bears Ears.
President Bill Clinton originally designated 1.7 million acres as Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in 1996. After some additional adjustments from Congress, the boundaries expanded to 1.87 million acres.
Trump reduced the size of the monument in 2017 by roughly half. Biden then restored Grand Staircase-Escalante to its full boundaries in 2021.
Now Grand Staircase-Escalante is 90% smaller.
