CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What’s left of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante after Trump slashed the monuments’ boundaries? See the new maps.​

Grand Staircase-Escalante will be reduced from 1.87 million acres to just over 181,500 acres, while Bears Ears will be cut from 1.36 million acres to nearly 121,100 acres.

Maps released Tuesday by the White House show that Trump’s new cuts remove many iconic locations from the monuments, including The Grand Staircase in Grand Staircase-Escalante and Valley of the Gods in Bears Ears.

President Bill Clinton originally designated 1.7 million acres as Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in 1996. After some additional adjustments from Congress, the boundaries expanded to 1.87 million acres.

Trump reduced the size of the monument in 2017 by roughly half. Biden then restored Grand Staircase-Escalante to its full boundaries in 2021.

Now Grand Staircase-Escalante is 90% smaller.

Biden restored much of Bears Ears, if I recall. Both of these monuments can really benefit from the protection. Bears Ears is amazing top to bottom of the original extent. I've explored a lot of it.

Nothing is so amazing it can't benefit from a Trump Hotel, and some oil pumps.

Though, to get serious for a moment, the shrinking of the monuments, besides the loss of protections for some of the most amazing landscapes, is a slap in the fact to the Native American tribes, who consider those areas as sacred.

Yes I think 5 of the tribes were core participants in the monuments concept and management plan.

I know from personal experience that whole area was lived in and is rich in archaeology. You can find painted pot shards from appx 1000 to 1300 western reckoning all over the place. And buildings from large pueblos to desperate cliff shelters across the whole area. Often you have to look carefully tho. Most don't shout their presence after almost a thousand years. But some do appear quite intact. The rock art is my favorite.

I'm sure the temptation to trash the place is great with the money at stake. I can see future generations being quite upset with us tho.

I hope Bears Ears is saved. Just like the others monuments should be saved. But Trump doesn't seem to care about nature or plant life. Just look at what he did at the White House.

Trump, who, ironically, admires Teddy Roosevelt, wants to take our national monuments back to the days when people exploited our national treasures for their own gain.
