  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Mount Gilead Baptist Church, a congregation founded by freed slaves 150 years ago in Fort Worth, Texas, held its final service on Sunday in a historic building they have worshipped in since 1912, citing mounting maintenance costs and dwindling membership.

LoopNet, the leading online marketplace for commercial real estate, currently lists the 600-seat building at 600 Grove Street as under contract for $2.5 million. The sale comes after members voted 19-4 to sell the building last summer.

Longtime members like Patricia Williams are hopeful and nostalgic as they mark the end of a long and meaningful chapter in the church’s history.

The closing of any church is sad. This one perhaps moreso. What has been lost in the 150+ years since emancipation is that blacks were once not allowed to meet unless a white man was present. That was due to fears of rebellion. While blacks often attended the same churches as whites into the Reconstruction era, there were a few black congregations that met under the supervision rule prior to the end of the Civil War. Striking out on their own, without white supervision, is a story of freedom that is practically forgotten.
