  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As for me, I have read through it several times and have memorized some Scriptures, although I would not consider myself a scholar by any means.

I think I will forever just be a student.

Have you guys ever heard of Billy Graham? One of the most famous preachers of this past century I would suspect. But he is dead now. Lived to be exactly 100. People used to call him "The Walking Bible" because he had at least half of the Bible memorized. That blew me away. I don't think I am intelligent enough to memorize half the Bible. Or to even go to some place like Harvard for that matter.

It's not how much you know, as Bible knowledge gives no one God's free gift of Eternal Life. But that you believe in God's promise that all who believe in Jesus for Eternal Life (God's free gift) receives Eternal Life and that can be seen in simple verses found in The Gospel of John.

John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
------------------
John 3:14,15 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

------------------
John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
------------------
John 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
------------------
John 3:18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is

condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only
begotten Son of God.
------------------
John 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
------------------
John 5:24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
------------------
John 6: 27,28,29 Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”

Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”
Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
------------------
John 6:47 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believe in Me has everlasting life.
------------------
John 11:25,26,27

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”
------------------
John 20:31

but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

Billy Graham knows the Bible better perhaps but I obey it. I lost faith in him when I found out he was rich.
Being rich doesn't mean that he didn't serve the Lord Jesus Christ.

Its my opinion that you cant serve both the Lord and money. Jesus teaches us to flee from wealth when he said not to store wealth on earth. The apostle Paul teaches Timothy to flee from desiring wealth and to be content with life's necessities. If wealth is ok why shouldn't I desire it? The scripture says that God withholds no good thing. Why not make us all rich if its good? Why did James say the poor are rich in faith? I follow Jesus and his apostles. They were not rich.

You believe the same exact way my mom does. She told me what you are now telling us.

I disagree with her. I don't think that being rich is necessarily a bad thing, but it becomes bad if you give yourself over to greed/excess and money becomes like your god or something. People shouldn't worship money. We should be content with whatever God gives us. Isn't that what the Apostle Paul taught?

Do you believe that if a person is rich in financial wealth then that person is NOT saved?

Know, in what sense ?

I know plenty of trivia about it; the names & order of most of the books; what most of them are about; their likely dates of composition; & so on.

i have not read quite all of it.

I believe they err from the faith
Being wealthy is not a sin. Being dirt-poor is no evidence of righteousness. A Prosperity Gospel-in-reverse is no truer or better than what it reverses. Both, not just the Prosperity Gospel, are theologically defective.

Why do people think that if you preach against wealth that you are preaching poverty? The apostle Paul teaches that we should have equality by sharing. Thats not poverty necessarily

It's bad if you get rich by teaching what is false because it appeals to the very fleshly human nature and feeds their wants instead of their needs or preys upon the desperate. One that promises what it cannot deliver and is basically a con.

There were two men,

The first was a pastor, he has read the bible 7 times from Moses to Revelation and understands all Greek and all prophecy; but he trusted in his knowledge, and forgot to love his neighbor. The second was a poor man, he never learned to read but walks humbly with God and loves his neighbor from the heart.

Which of these two men is accepted?

Riches isn't the problem it's the LOVE/coveting of them that's is a problem. (1 Tim 6:10)

Abraham was very rich in livestock, silver & gold” (Gen 13:2). Gen 14 tidbit, after defeating the coalition of kings who kidnapped Lot, Abram gave the BEST 10th of the war spoils to Melchizedek, the priest‑king of Salem (Gen 14:20). He then refused to keep any of the remaining goods for himself, returning them to their rightful owners & allowing only his allies to take their share (Gen 14:23–24). Abram kept nothing for himself.

Job Before & after his trials, Job is described as the greatest of all the men of the east (Job 1:3). After restoration, God doubled his wealth (Job 42:10).

Solomon Scripture says he surpassed all kings of the earth in wealth & wisdom (1 Kings 10:23). It's believed he wrote Proverbs, Ecclesiastes & Song of Solomon.

David amassed enormous personal wealth & national treasure (1 Chronicles 29:28). Personally donated massive amounts of gold & silver for the temple (1 Chron 29:3–5). A man after God's own heart.

Isaac became very wealthy (Gen 26:12–14).

Jacob left Laban with huge flocks & servants (Gen 30:43).

Jacob son Joseph 2nd in command of Egypt was very rich

Boaz wealthy landowner & righteous man married a gentile/Ruth (Ruth 2:1).

Lydia successful businesswoman & early believer (Acts 16:14–15).

Joseph of Arimathea Described as a rich man & a disciple of Jesus (Matt 27:57).

We are not Abraham, Solomon or David. They had more than one wife. Can i have that? No? Why then should i have their wealth? We are not them. We are Jesus and his apostles. They were not rich because their wealth was in heaven. Jesus said not to store wealth on earth. That means not being rich. And when you feed your lust with money and horde it then its love for money. It sure isn't love for poor people who have nothing.

Abraham's wives were a moral issue, Abraham’s wealth was not! The New Covenant forbids polygamy, but it never forbids wealth.

Paul directly addresses rich believers & doesn’t tell them to become poor. He tells them not to trust in riches & to be rich in good works, generous & ready to share (1 Tim 6:17–18).

The issue is the heart posture, not the bank balance. Scripture repeatedly shows God blessing believers with wealth. Not once does the Bible condemn them for having it. The problem is not wealth it's the love of riches (1 Tim 6:10). Wealth becomes sinful only when it becomes a master, when it feeds covetousness, or when it is withheld from those in need. The Bible condemns greed, not provision.

These wives were not a moral issue at the time. And our wealth is in heaven not on earth. Jesus basically said not to be rich. He said to be rich in heaven not on earth. The apostles were not rich. I'll follow them and you follow Solomon i guess

I disagree with your presentation of wealth in Scripture & with the personal assumptions in your replies. At this point it’s clear we see the text differently, so I’m content to leave it there. Best wishes, JJ

So were people like Lydia and Joseph of Arimathea disobeying God, in your opinion, in that they were rich?

They probably gave to the poor. Paul told Timothy not to desire wealth but to be content with food and clothing. Why is that? Why did Jesus say not to store wealth on earth but in heaven?
