  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The SAVE America Act passed by a 218–213 vote on Feb 11, 2026. It now moves to the Senate.
The bill would require voter ID in elections as early as this November.
All Republicans present voted for it; one Democrat, voted for it.

Most drivers' licenses are now Real ID drivers' licenses, and proof of birth, residency, any name changes, marriage related or legal, Social Security #'s, have been thoroughly annotated. We just did this a few months ago, and some of my family members had to get their BC's from NY. That involved sending the request, a $10 money order (no checks, debits, etc.) and an SASE. They gave them temporary Real ID's so that we could fly to my brother's funeral, but said their licenses would be suspended if we didn't submit the BC's in 10 days. A lot of red tape that doesn't need to be repeated.
I would exoect that non-citizen drivers' licenses, in those states which issue them, look different from standard drivers' licenses. Perhaps orientation (which some states do to isolate drivers under 21) or a slightly different color.
Women who have changed their names through marriage will be most likely to not get it all done in time---and since women are more likely to vote Democratic, the SAVE Act has "misogyny" written all over it.

I voted "No" because the SAVE act isn't about displaying ID to vote; it's about displaying evidence of US citizenship. While I favor restricting voting to US citizens only, that very well may fall to the states. Note that the US Constitution doesn't state how states must chose electors to the Electoral College, and in the very first presidential elections, the states appointed electors. I'm not sure about the constitutionality of the SAVE act.

Here in the UK voters who actual go to vote now have to produce some kind of identification which includes a photo, like a driving licence or a passport. Voters like me, who have a postal vote do no need photo ID.

Yes, and I had a classmate who ended up doing time for voter fraud. Showing ID to vote is, IMHO, a good idea. I've often said that if there was a zombie outbreak, the dead would head to the polls out of habit.

The SAVE act is something else. Yes, it requires showing ID, but it's to show ID to prove citizenship in order to vote. If a state required it, it would be different, but this is a federal requirement and I'm not sure that it's constitutional.

In the US, opposing ID is an interesting thing. The first opposition centered around cost. We have a Constitutional Amendment banning paying a tax to vote, as this restricts who can vote to those with the money to do so, and having to pay for the necessary ID could fall into the same category. And so I've seen states offer free ID sufficient to vote.

Here we get into something curious: One state had a mobile unit to go from town to town to provide free ID. You didn't even have to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles. I found out about it thanks to an editorial opposing voter ID and urging people not to get one. You'd think our papers and other media would have notified people when the mobile unit was in town, but instead there was nothing. Nada. Zilch. Odd that the opponents to voter ID didn't want people to know how they could get one. Just as it's odd that there are voter registration drives and sometimes efforts to get voters to the polls, but not very much to help them get IDs. Make of that what you will.

I think it is good if they are simply using the ID to verify your eligibility to vote. Georgia has been doing that for a while. They don't put your photo ID on your voting ballot, you simply need it to enter and vote
