  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

The world heard JD Vance being booed at the Olympics. Except for viewers in the US.

It looks like the American media is editing out content deemed not suitable for American audiences.

Is this censorship common in America?

The American media generally would accentuate things like the booing of our VP. This may be the doing of the particular people involved in charge of broadcasting the event.

Is the booing of a leader what the Olympics are all about?

You'll have to talk to the National Broadcasting Corporation, who's carrying the Winter Olympics. Just let some of us know when you do; most likely they'll squirm, and some of us would find that entertaining.

As it happens, US networks can and will delete portions of broadcasts. Most famously it's putting "live" broadcasts on a delay of a few seconds in order to remove foul language. In other examples, it includes portions of live events they'd just rather we not see. Such as NFK players taking the knee during the National Anthem, precisely because that put the NFL (and by extension the network) in a bad light with many viewers. When they can't edit it out, such as that live interview at a NASCAR event where the crowded chanted one thing and the network reporter claimed they were chanting another. And that's where "Let's go, Brandon," came from.

Censorship isn't common, but marketing is extremely common. NBC wants its viewers to be in a happy mood so that they'll keep watching and therefore will keep watching all the ads. I wasn't in the editorial room, but that's my guess for the cuts they made.

I had some concern that the crowd might boo our athletes. I'm glad that didn't happen. They're athletes, not legislators. The vice-president -- eh, he's fair game.

Correct. It was NBC. The BBC and other broadcasters didn’t edit out the booing.

FWIW, I consider booing the VP on-brand for them.
It does rather indicate what people of the world think of the current American administration.
