  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

At the dawn of the nuclear age, scientists created the Doomsday Clock as a symbolic representation of how close humanity is to destroying the world. On Tuesday, nearly eight decades later, the clock was set at 85 seconds to midnight — the closest the timepiece has ever been to midnight, according to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which established the clock in 1947.

Midnight represents the moment at which people will have made Earth uninhabitable.

I thought midnight was just the point of catastrophe, but under 30 seconds was the point of no return, but I cannot find where I got that from now, so I have no objective reference at all.

May the Lord Jesus Christ reach as many people as He can with some sense and strength, especially those in positions of power.

Uninhabitable? No. Millions dead? Yes. Shortening human life span? In affected areas, which in some cases would likely be huge swathes of continents, yes. The uninhabitable claim is well into hyperbole.

Then again, so is the Doomsday Clock. The closest we’ve come to nuclear war was probably in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crises, yet the Doomsday Clock was set to 7 minutes before midnight. Hello: I grew up when Civil Defense handed out guides on how to build fall-out shelters and prepare for a nuclear war. That’s how close we were. And we’re supposed to believe we’re closer now than then?

I can think of one serious flash point, one that some are urging to ramp up to actual confrontation to Russia, and a quick check finds that in 2022, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists supported NATO involvement. Odd that they didn’t seem to be as concerned about nuclear war then.
