  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

NOAA releases 20th Annual "Arctic Report Card". The last 10 years have been the hottest 10 years on record

In 2006, when the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, released the first-ever Arctic Report Card, scientists already knew the top of the world was in trouble.

It’s now much worse, according to the 20th edition of the report, which tracks the health of the polar region across multiple indicators.

The last 10 years have been the Arctic’s hottest 10 on record. Warm Atlantic waters have pushed into the central Arctic Ocean, hastening the loss of sea ice. With less ice to reflect sunlight back into space, and faster-melting snow, the region is primed to warm further. And as Arctic permafrost thaws, it releases more heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

  • From October 2024 to September 2025, Arctic-wide surface air temperatures were the warmest in at least 125 years. (Hydrologists typically measure the year from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30 to better align with seasonal rainfall and snowmelt cycles.)
  • Precipitation over the same period was the highest since 1950. Overall, the atmosphere over the Arctic is becoming more moisture-laden, causing more extreme precipitation events, including atmospheric rivers that can cover large expanses with rain or snow.
  • The yearly peak coverage of sea ice in March was the smallest observed in 47 years of satellite records, while summer sea ice coverage was 28% smaller than two decades ago.
  • The ice isn’t just shrinking; it’s also getting younger and thinner. The oldest, thickest ice in the Arctic — the kind that stays frozen for four years or more — has declined by more than 95% since the 1980s.
  • As permafrost thaws, it appears to be releasing iron and other elements into rivers and streams. This may explain why over 200 watersheds in Alaska have turned orange in the past decade, a phenomenon called rusting.

The report card itself.

I hope the people at NOAA have their resumes up to date,
I expect they do. I gather NCAR is filed under NSF rather than NOAA, but...

Scientists Denounce Trump’s Plan to Kill Crucial Atmospheric Science Center

The U.S. government is dismantling the National Center for Atmospheric Research, jettisoning key climate science projects in the process

The Trump administration is dismantling the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), long considered the crown jewel in the U.S.’s earth science infrastructure. Scientists who study climate, weather and other earth sciences have decried the move, first reported by USA Today, as “taking a sledgehammer” to an “iconic” center dedicated to studying our planet.

The center, based in Boulder, Colo., has become a target because of what Russ Vought, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, described as “climate alarmism” in a statement to USA Today.

The work to dismantle NCAR, founded in 1960, will begin immediately, USA Today reported, and will involve fully closing the center’s iconic Mesa Laboratory.

When he isn't destroying institutions or the White House, Trump is destroying satellites.
The the Orbiting Carbon Observatories are to be destroyed for the sole reason that they measure the carbon concentration in the atmosphere.

Why has Antartica gained ice from 2021 to 2023? The article does not say.

They say in the article that it is due to to increased precipitation. Don't they?

Sorry for the link to the captcha, this is the title of the scientific article "Unprecedented mass gain over the Antarctic ice sheet between 2021 and 2022 caused by large precipitation anomalies"

Thanks for that. It makes sense now.

Antarctica is also losing ice. There was a period of time when it was increasing, but overall long term trends have shown continued decrease.

The temporary increase stopped around 2014-2015 and it's been continually down for about the past decade or so. Which is now well below what it's been even going back a century ago and beyond.

Also, sea ice extent shouldn't be confused with sea ice thickness. Some people confuse the two. But in places like the arctic, we've seen decreases in the rate of sea ice thickness loss, but this is because there is less and less ice available to melt away. It would be like throwing an ice cub in the asphalt in the summer, and when the ice cube completely melts away, arguing that the ice isn't melting anymore. Well of course the ice cube isn't melting anymore, there is no more ice left to melt.

I know. My question was about the ice gain not about the lost ice. The lost ice is well documented. But thanks anyway.

Their one graph is interesting too, you can see that ice gain:

As though just for a blip of time there was an increase from 2022-2023

But yea... interesting stuff.

Pathetic.

These people are a piece of work. Idolizing ignorance.
Trump truly believes that reality is a matter of PR. Take away the information, and reality changes. And this guy is running things in America.

Mark Twain once wrote about a riverboat engineer, who was annoyed by a warning whistle that was repeatedly sounding when the steam pressure exceeded a safe amount. He "solved" it by hanging a weight on the valve, preventing it from activating.

From your article:
However, this isn't a sign that global warming and climate change have miraculously reversed. Picture a long ski slope with a small jump at the end. That's what a line through the Antarctic ice sheet data looks like when plotted on a graph. While there have been some recent ice gains, they don't even begin to make up for almost 20 years of losses.

Warmer seas mean more moisture in the air. But that's not the only factor. Since Antarctica has warmed up, it snows more in the interior. Extremely cold air is very dry, and doesn't produce much precipitation.

Antarctica is considered a desert because it receives very little rain or snowfall. The small amount of snow that does fall does not melt but builds up over hundreds and thousands of years to form large, thick ice sheets.
