  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Interesting strategy. So lying prone on the ground while he's kicking you, you'd just...get up and walk away and he'd just be in awe and stop pummelling you.
Edit:
Also, this ACTUALLY relates to gerrymandering not at all.

What an inane thing to say. Why would I just lay on the ground and let someone kick me? Why would I not get up and walk away?

Yeesh. And I realize this has nothing to do with gerrymandering, but I was just responding to the horrible analogy presented to me.

So Republicans won't extend the credit and don't want Americans to save that money and spend it on food and such?

I don't know what Republicans will or won't do regarding credits. What I do know is that the CR keeps things as they were. And today, it looks like enough Democrats have agreed to open the government on the Biden budget and THEN negotiate additional spending.

Holy Cow you guys act like this has never been done before by the Democrats. Gerry mandering has been a thing for a long time in both parties. Except California passed a law against it. I guess they changed their mind huh?
Yep. And republicans are horrified and offended. "You're doing the same crooked things we're doing! NO FAIR! WHAAA!!"

The answer of course, is to ban the rigging of districts for any reason. But the Supreme Court is so corrupt that it will take a new law to stop this debasement of democracy.

No we dont.

Which party do you expect to voluntarily put themselves at a unilateral disadvantage?

What we all need is for gerrymandering to be illegal across the board.

Why do you think they'd just let you get up and walk away?

For someone who clearly knows that this has nothing to do with gerrymandering, you sure seem interested in continuing this meaningless discussion.

Because the next time you go into the bar he'll do exactly the same thing. He wants to do it and nobody is stopping him. Including you. If every time you turn the other cheek he slaps it then at some point you have to get up off the floor, say enough is enough and smack the guy back.

Y'know what? The rest of the bar will give a little cheer and people will want to buy you a beer.

Keep walking out and 1) you lose respect from everyone. And 2) you keep getting beat up every time you walk back in.

Or, if the analogy is too obscure for you, if you're the Dems and you accept every dirty trick the GOP hits you with and do nothing then 1) you lose the respect of those who voted for you. And 2) the GOP will carry on doing it.

Look, I don't really care myself. Its been part of the process for Democrats and Republicans forever. Now someone wants to be upset? Give me a break. Democrats-"You're doing what we've been doing so we are going to raise a stink!"
Republicans-"No You're doing what we are doing, so we are going to raise a stink!"

Neither side has a leg to stand on and certainly does not have the moral high ground. They are both rolling around in the mud equally.

Agreed. But then certain groups would complain they are being discriminated against. I would seriously do a grid system with equal square miles.

I think you just missed the point of the analogy. Let me try to clarify: The bar is the country, the person kicking you is a political party resorting to unfair or dirty tricks to win an election. In this analogy, your solution, "just get up and walk away," would equate to leaving the country.

Is that your best solution for handling political disagreements or responding to unfair political tactics?

No. They pretty much just started doing what the republicans do. And it was the republicans who started screaming about it.

Look, I don't really care myself. Its been part of the process for Democrats and Republicans forever. Now someone wants to be upset?
Gov. Abbott of Texas had a conniption over it. All that work he did to disenfranchise democrats, all for nothing.

What scares them, is a level playing field. For good reason.

Because the next time you go into the bar

1) I don't go to bars.

he'll do exactly the same thing.

Sounds like a real problem for hypothetical guy. He really should deal with himself.

He wants to do it and nobody is stopping him.

I kinda feel sorry for hypothetical guy as you describe him. What an empty, broken life, just beating up random people.

Including you. If every time you turn the other cheek he slaps it then at some point you have to get up off the floor, say enough is enough and smack the guy back.

Or, I could just go somewhere else, since apparently the owners don't care enough to stop hypothetical guy from smacking their other customers around for no apparent reason.

Y'know what? The rest of the bar will give a little cheer and people will want to buy you a beer.

Oh boy! Adulation and praise from a bunch of drunks! (2) I don't drink beer). And now I kind of feel sorry for hypothetical guy number two that craves acceptance from random drunks in a bar.

Keep walking out and 1) you lose respect from everyone.

Why on earth would I care what a bunch of drunks think about me?

And 2) you keep getting beat up every time you walk back in.

I already told you, I'll just go somewhere else where hypothetical guy that beats me up for no reason isn't allowed.

Or, if the analogy is too obscure for you,

Not obscure. Inane.

It would appear that integrity is just not an important quality for most people when speaking of their politics. However, it is paramount for me.

When someone tells me one thing and then does the opposite, they are, by definition, a hypocrite. I don't care what the circumstances are.

Now you can choose to believe me or not, but I have done things to my own detriment because of my integrity. As a simple example, I've been in games that I've lost because the other person or team cheated. But that doesn't make it OK for me to cheat in response.

I "understand" this "hit back" mantra that is being pushed here. I disagree with it. Integrity means something to me. And while hypothetical guy in the "analogy" lost the respect of others because he wouldn't stoop to the level of the bully, the exact opposite is true for me. Someone who holds fast to what they believe will gain far more respect from me than someone who discards their principles on a whim.

Once upon a time, the Democrats at least gave lip service to the idea that they would "go high" when their opponents "go low". Not any more. We're all in the mud now with seemingly no escape, because that's what happens when you sacrifice your integrity.

Thats absurd. As much as Im an environmentalist, its people who need representation in congress. Not grass and ants. No people are entitled to more powerful representation than others just because of where they live

It's just both parties now following the same rules. Supreme Court says corrupt districting is O.K. so long as the primary intent in to give one's party an unfair advantage. And now republicans are furious that democrats have started following the new rules, too.

The key is that each group should have representation proportional to their proportion of the population.

As an independent, I'm not "furious". I'm just discouraged.
